I own a WII. It's fun, amazing, and I will still be playing it for years to come. Might get a 360 later on, but I'm not not getting a PS3.

i love my 360
i got a huge extrenal harddrive that i put all my dvds onto so i can watch it when i want on the 360
and having the wireless feature to hook to your network so you can play music off of your computers is a huge help too
its a good feature that sold me on it

A 360 is one of the components in our flat's entertainment centre. I feel it offers the best compromise of price, catalogue and hardware capabilities. We also have a Wii and a PS2. The PS3 is a solution looking for a problem.

I'm fairly negative towards the PS3 because, having tried one on several occasions, I wasn't very impressed with the graphics, nor the fact that many, if not most (?), games were only 720P. For a console that is marketed as having the best graphics and the most power, at a high price, it did nothing to impress me. The 360 is cheap and well established. It has its issues, but they are outweighed by its positive points.
Let it never be said that I'm a Microsoft fan, because that is just not true. I feel that they seem to know their shit when it comes to the 360 though.

Videos can easily be streamed to the Xbox360 or PS3 from a computer. The issue will come when online downloads of video/music surpass disk technology (blu-ray is an amazing technology for hard storage, but the ability to download high resolution video to a system could supplant it if hard drive storage and bandwidth become a more cost effective approach)
Both the ps3 and xbox360 have the ability to do so, it just isn't used to its fullest potential yet (they really just allow the download of trailers and game demos, unless you transfer files over from your computer).

I have a 360, my friend has a PS3. He is a PS fanboy... ugh. He is always saying the Xbox is a marketing rip off cause of
-Red Ring of Death
-Pay for online play
-Smaller hardrive space
-Cheap external Cd holder
-A 'push' button, not touch
Now, I prove all this wrong, cause the "elite" does not have the RROD. Somehow, even if he on his PS3 has more disk space, somehow, I have twice the amount of games played on my system, and I have more like over 10 game demos, when he has 2, but I still have more disk space in the end. The CD and touch button are also traps. If you have to, and the system breaks down, you can get the external cd drive out, but internal ones you have to take apart the system. And touch buttons can be quite unreliable. And as for graphics, I have never noticed how much "better" PS3 graphics are than 360... They look the goddam same!
That said, I still want a PS3 for MGS4. It isn't a bad system, just a bit expensive and overpriced, but the biggest plus for it is blu-ray. I was going to get one for the blu-ray reason until my brother shot our HD-TV with my airsoft gun >=|

The RRoD used to be a major issue, these days it isn't. I think they finally pulled their finger out and fixed it, it was a pain in the arse though.
I also feel that the size of the hard disks in both consoles is irrelevant. It's hardly like it'd make a viable media centre. Who has a media centre with less than 300GB of storage? What's the point?
Surely it's not a very good media centre if all you can fit on it is a handful of films and your music collection? Maybe I'm just crazy in that respect. I wouldn't use either console for media.
I also don't get the point of HDDVD and BR, they both seem fairly pointless, given that the resolution increase is marginal and the price hike is substantial. I'd want a BR burner for archiving footage though, but overall, I can barely see the difference between DVD and HD when I'm sitting a few metres away on the sofa.

I wouldn't call the resolution difference between SD and full 1080 HD marginal.
As I said earlier - most of the games I've encountered don't actually support full 1080P, most seem to only do 720P.
The difference between 720x576 (or 480) and 1280x720 isn't that noticeable in most cases, on a 720P screen. As long as the SD source material is high bitrate, it scales up quite nicely.
If you're watching a DVD on a 720P telly, unless you're sitting really close to the screen, I doubt the difference would be very noticeable. It hasn't been when we tried it.

Having played an Xbox and getting a simple idea on how it does things.
The PS3 is superior.
I dont say this because I own one (which I do), but I get a lot from Xbox fans that the PS3 sucks.
1. The PS3 does in fact have superior graphics (Xbox does not use Blu-ray discs, therefore does not need the power to play High-Def games)
2. Online is free and not laggy and with my 80gig model I can connect wirelessly to my internet connection. No more cables than the power and HDMI cables. (People say the online stuff you can do for Xbox is better, I say its the same, but you have to pay for it. Thats a rip off if you ask me)
3. The PS3 is THE most powerful game console out there. (Like my Mac, I could do a zillion things at once and it wouldn't freeze up or overheat)(NOTE: No pun intended there)
4. All games are 1080p res, no matter what the box says. (That is if you have a LCD screen TV)
5. PS3 can do anything an Xbox can but much better. (All except for playing an Xbox game)
6. I hate Halo, its an overrated game and is the only thing keeping Xbox alive if you ask me. That and its price.
7. Do not let the price fool you, buy the most expensive one and you will get your moneys worth. I own a $600 80gig PS3 and it runs like a racehorse.
8. PS3 NEVER OVERHEATS! Thats right NEVER, no matter how long I've played the damn thing it has never overheated, its internal fan is sooo powerfull.
Thats all I have to say

so, all in all, if you want to watch HD movies, ps3. if you want great games and graphics, 360.

PS3 Games NOTE: Not listed as MY OWN all time favorites
Resistance: Fall of Man
Stuntman: Ignition
Soul Caliber IV (face it, PS3 version gets Darth Vader and Yoda, Xbox cant beat that)
Mobile Suit Gundam
Meal Gear Solid 4
Motor Storm
Rainbow Six Vegas 2 (better on PS3)
Guitar Hero 3 and Aerosmith (I am a Guitar Hero GOD, PS3 version all the way)
Grand Theft Auto IV (Best for the online mode)
Lair (AWESOME GAME!)
Warhawk
And every other original PS2 game out there.
Xbox 360
Halo 3 (the game is fun but not INCREDIBLY AWESOME like people make it out to be)
Bioshock (never played this game but it looks OK)
And every game you can get on the PS3 also
Not much of an improvement. IF your going to put up a good argument you need to at least know some more about the PS3.

I know a fair bit about both consoles and I favour the 360. I've been massively underwhelmed by the collection of games available for the machine. I don't love the Halo series, but I can say that all three titles are better than Resistance in my opinion, whatever that counts for.
Your list also lists several games as if they only exist for the PS3, I know you state otherwise, somewhere in that confusing wording, but it clearly is an attempt to portray the 360 in a negative light.
Additionally, I'm not sure if all PS2 games are compatible with the non-emotion engine PS3s. Similarly, not all Xbox games are compatible with the 360. Neither catalogue is fully supported, as far as I know.
The PS3 has been badly handled by a company that has enough experience in the industry that it should know better. Its power is reasonable, but not much better than the 360 in practice. It does offer support for BR movies, but then again, where's the incentive to repurchase films at a higher price for marginal benefits at best? If the 360 had been equipped with a HD-DVD drive from the outset I would have said the same of it - it's fairly pointless.
I'm trying to think of criticism to level against the 360 to counter myself, but all I can think of is that XBL isn't free. Even then, the cost is fairly negligible.
I view the consoles at both trying to do the same job but one being clearly a superior tool. The PS3 has plenty of power under the hood, but a great deal of it isn't that useful for gaming, given the relative complexity of the challenge it presents to code for. By comparison, the 360 is a familiar environment, for better or worse.
There's no real advantage over the 360 and so, in my mind, it comes down to cost. The 360 is cheaper.

lets agree to disagree on this one. ether way, im not going to be getting a ps3 any time soon. there both good systems with horrible problems, so, its basically down to the company you like best. i do like sony, but something about the ps3 just, sucks. not that the 360 is amazing, but yeah. im looping around now.

My problem with the 360 and its fans is that they portray the 360 as the all powerful superior system.
Its not, the Xbox may be cheaper, there are probably more original games but by far technologically it is not more superior than the PS3.
I was thinking about buying the Xbox because the PS3 was going to be expensive. My parents knew how much I wanted it so they got it for me for Christmas of 2007.
To this day I have no problems.

What's under the hood isn't overly important, as long as it's good enough, as far as games go. There's just not the financial incentive to develop things exclusively for the PS3, it makes far more sense to develop for the 360 and then port to the PS3, thereby mostly negating any technological advantage.
The 360 isn't the be-all-end-all of consoles, but of the current selection of two, I'd say it's the superior machine for the traditional gaming demographic.

Not to be a pain, but aren't you just painting the picture that the PS3 is the "all powerful superior system". In your games list you include games that come for both system and you just feel the PS3 versions are better/superior (without any legitimate reasoning). Don't you feel that makes you a little bit of a hypocrite?
Single console games and heavy brand loyalty are dying out, as more and more companies find it more worthwhile to release games for both consoles. This makes the PS3 a much harder sell, when one could just get similar technology and most of the same games on the 360.
Personally, I see it similarly to the last generation of consoles. The Xbox came out later than the PS2 and offered pretty much the same stuff. The Xbox was always trying to play catch up to the PS2 or add features (and in doing so, an internet system was built up that the PS3 is now catching up to). This time around, the XBox 360 beat the PS3 to the punch and the PS3 is playing catch up.
Either way, no system is vastly superior to another (from the same generation) - so choice comes down entirely to preference and maybe a specific game (Metal Gear Solid has me thinking of saving up for a PS3)
Last Pistolero
07-03-2008, 06:35 AM
If you like games, Xbox 360 is the only way to go. The X360 has a better range of exclusive games and more of them, and typically a muti-platform game will look, run and play better on the X360 that it does on the PS3.
Then again, if you really want a cheap Blu-Ray player, and see the games as just an added bonus, the PS3 does have its place.
The Wii is fun, but it's overrated. Tere are only a few genuinely great games on it - with most Wii software being either cheap gimmicks or unplayable shovelware.

Does it really count when the company has to pony up alot of cash to make that ps3 game turn into xbox exclusive before it's released, and not to mention just basicly dropping the origional xbox hardware and software, therefore forcing them into buying it to make more sales undoubtably.

Surely the relevant fact is that a game appears on a platform, not how it got there?
As far as I'm aware, here in Europe, MS paid off Harmonix to release Rock Band many months earlier on 360 than on PS3/Wii. I don't really care about that. I care that I can play Rock Band now, not in September.

but thats just because of the games
and the fact that ive always hated ps2
ps3 has better graphics by far
but if it was between xbox 360 ps3 and wii
it would be wii by far
and if i was stranded on a deserted island (and there was a plug on this island)
and i could only take one game console and one game
it would be wii and super smash bros brawl

You dont have to pay to playonline, and in the next year or so the quality of the games is gonna jump WAY up
because PS3 uses Blu-ray discs, which hold almost 10 times as much information than a normal game disc
and so far, they haven't even tapped into the quality those discs have to offer.

the 360 has been dabbling in a converter for blue ray. so saying blue ray is crap.
its basically gameplay.
just because something is amazing, doesnt mean its a great game. id rather play doom then some games out today, because doom is a fun game. so no more comparing graphics.

I think it comes down to what people are used to.
The X-box controller was designed by someone high. I can't play any game using that controller. I think it is because I'm used to Playstation controllers.
I find it funny that gamer mags that take sponsor money for X-box say X-box and PS3 sponsor money say PS3.
I've been playing Video Games since 1972 and the system that is cool to watch games on is the Wii. I get more out of games on PS3 and X-box is from the devil so i really can't nice things about Microsoft.

I never thought Madden could be replaced but Guitar Hero is really f'ing cool! The original Xbox controller was horrible. That thing was a brick and only good for beating your opponent with when you're losing - I consider it winning, not cheating. The new Xbox360 controller is actually very ergonomic and comfortable to use (it has come a long way and they've finally found a setup that is pretty nice - not perfect, but nice). This is coming from someone who has been using Playstation controllers since before the dualshock days (on the PS1).
The Wii is more fun as a party/get together system, but from what I've noticed it's only as fun to watch as the people playing it (such as my friends who jump into things waving the controller around - and that's entertainment).
Seriously though, you feel the Xbox is from the devil (Microsoft?), but Sony is an angel? Both companies are only out to make your money - it's same as with the Apple vs. Microsoft debates, it's all about the green for both companies.
Graphics wise, the Xbox360 and PS3 are fairly close now, but in the future the PS3 developers may make better use of the system and surpass the Xbox360. The Xbox360 has a more widely used and nicer setup online system (PS3 is still catching up).
No system is better than another in totality; they all have ups and downs.

Why does having a bigger disc make a game better?
The main use of disc space is textures. There's only a certain amount of textures a given game needs for this generation of consoles.
Having more data on a disc dost not a better game make.
The quality of the titles may well improve, but having access to more storage space shouldn't make much difference, given that it's rarely a limiting factor at present.

This is a very valid point. Disc storage will not allow an unlimited build in textures and image quality and in this generation of systems it cannot be fully utilized. It does allow for longer games and more extras, though.

I like Blu-Ray as a storage format - as soon as the discs come down in price I'll be fitting my media centre with a BR writer so I can backup content more easily. That said, I don't think that streaming that much data from a disc is sensible, it leads to long load times and mandatory hard disk installs. Neither of which are appealing, to be honest.

Hehehehehehe!
I've been really uncool and plumped for the PS3...
As a blu-ray machine it constantly gets good reviews as Sony keep updating the firmware... I'm getting my head around the media centre aspect of it and it's quite intuitive.
All in all, as a general (and fairly cheap) multimedia 'node', it does what it says on the tin...
...oh yeah, plays games as well (but if that was my primary concern I would have considered the 360 much more seriously ;))

In my opioin the PS3 is far better, here's why:
1. The PS3 never overheats, ever. I once left it on for three days while running Oblivion and nothing happened.
2. The graphics rock. Seriously. Whenever I play Need for Speed: Carbon the word "photorealistic" comes to mind.
3. The ultimate gadget. Can run DVDs, Blu-Ray Disc, PS2 games and PS3 games. Plus no region code.
I love my PS3.

I bought my ps3 for my 18th birthday back in November of 2007 and it's so dope. I love that machine.
Xbox isn't bad I mean if I could just throw money around like it was nothing I would totally get an xbox because gears of war and fable2 look really cool. The price has come down alot too so maybe when I get paid good I'll say what the hell and buy an xbox.
Now the reason why I chose the PS3 over the xbox.
back when I bought my ps3 that red ring of death epidemic was everywhere, in fact a few months before I bought my ps3 i was gonna buy an xbox 360 and I just said no, didn't want to buy a system that would break and have me sending a package to microsoft, so I said I'll wait for a ps3.
I didn't want to have to pay $ to get online, I think it should be free. I liked the fact that it was wireless also and really i've never had any problem with the ps network.
MGS4. That game was the reason that I wanted a PS3 and it was so worth it. I love MGS so I couldn't miss out on MGS4, and I've always really liked Final Fantasy games, but I think 13 is coming out on xbox also.
I saw the fact that it was a blu-ray player as a bonus, and now that I actually have it hooked up to a 52 inch lcd I see the difference between using the hdmi cable and the av cables. I'm buying blu-ray movies from now on. It even upscales your dvds and you do notice a difference. It looks awesome.
So yea ps3 is where I go. I always liked Sony. but like I said if I had the $ i'd get an xbox cuz fable and gears of war look like alot of fun. I love my PS3 tho.

I'm with Vaughn, I loved my 360. I have had a ps1 and ps2 but when the ps3 was released, it was just to expensive, so I bought an xbox 360 which I loved. Sure it got the red ring twice in the 3 years I had it, but microsoft took care of it pretty quickly and got me a new one with in two weeks, no charge, and a month of free live. I also love all of the exlusive games (halo, gears, fable, left 4 dead ect..) so much that I could never switch to ps3.

Ha, well there's your problem! I just play the game locally with friends and have a blast. I play the game the way it was meant to played mind you (No items, flat stages, stock lives). The online was disappointing, but I was not surprised at all. Popular online games such as Halo, COD, WoW, Gears of War, etc... All have lag, but it doesn't really affect the gameplay.
Fighters on the other hand will always have lag problems online. When it's all about perfect timing, even the slightest lag will screw it up. Street Fighter 4 will probably have similar lag issues.

You do know the Xbox360 can also play music, movies, games and allow for online interaction? (not just in games but among friends/chats - even at that, the XBox360 online system is preferred by many gamers). Graphics performance is very similar - even if the PS3 is going to be capable of better graphics, as some argue (we'll see when developers start feeling like utilizing everything the systems have to offer).
The Ps3 really only has the perks of Metal Gear Solid 4, Blu Ray and a higher purchase price. If you need the Blu Ray player now and a game system, then the PS3 seems like a better deal - but as the format is still fairly new we'll see how its blu ray playing capability stacks up against dedicated players later on (when the technology comes down to a price point that replacing a home video library seems worthwhile.)

Xbox is better for games but the PS3 is better overall system.
I have both.
I love the xbox because you have more and better games. If I only played games I would only own a 360.
I love the PS3 because I can do so much more with it. For filmmaking with AVCHD cameras a ps3 is a great deal. I got one of the 60gb versions when they still put the flash card readers on them. So I can watch my HD movies in one of 3 ways I can either burn bluray files on regular DVDs and play them, or I can stick them on my small external drive (fat32 formatted) and plug it in play them directly or just take the memory stick out of my camera plug it in an play. So far I'm in no rush to buy a Bluray burner because I don't need to. You can still encode to play AVCHD on a 360 but why waste the time.
I also dont buy the 360 is cheaper argument solely because your not comparing equal items you have to buy the stuff as add-ons for the xbox because the PS3 already has them, honestly you get a lot less for that $100.
Performance wise I think games look better on xbox and I got my 360 after the first couple of batches so I never really had the gpu problems with mine.
Elscottomagnifico - cnet and ars technica have both rated the PS3 as the best blu ray player out so far

I think if your like super into playing video games then the xbox would be the way to go since there's a lot more games.
I play games but not a lot I mean every few weeks or so I'll sit down and play games, unless someone down to play some college hoops or fight night with me.
I get a lot of use out of my PS3 as a blu-ray player.
I didn't know xbox had wireless is that something new or added on?
Back when I was doing the comparison shopping I looked at the price tags and what i was getting for my $.
I got my PS3 for $500 compared to xbox at the time was like $350 i think. Anyways PS3 was free online and a blu-ray player, it was wireless etc, for Xbox at $350 to get online after the free trial was like $50 a year, then if i wanted to play HD-DVD's I would've had to buy the HD-DVD drive which was an expensive thing to add on, so i figured it cost more.
I dont rember the prices this was a while back like is aid i bought my ps3 in 07.

PS3! PS3 is the only one that has games rated 10. (unless a recent change but i dont think so)
people spending $500 on a ps3 is not smart. $500 will get you what, an 80gig? why don't you spend 250 or what ever on a 40, and buy an external 500Gb hdd for $90. since you cant "file" any of your movies/music/photos on PS3 anyway. just use the 40Gb it came with for your games and the external (which you can make files on and transport easy) for your movies n shit. SIMPLE, a 540Gb PS3 for roughly around 350. I'm not a fan of METALGEAR. I'm not a fan of HALO. I like UNREAL TOURNAMENT and GOST RECON and COD. i HATE Wii! HELL I STILL PLAY N64 and SUPER NINTENDO

Oh. and since the ps3 uses blu ray discs with games. games should hold more data right? meaning further graphic capabilities right? (this is a question i'm asking i'm not stating this.)
Well what matters is data transfer rates from the disc, and the amount of internal memory on the system (to hold all of that data from the disc in stasis while it's played with by the system), and the ability to shift that data on and off those memory chips to the processing units.
I have seen Devil May Cry 4 on both systems, and the graphics looked just about identical, but on the PS3 there was massive load times.
So I am assuming (completely unknown, I need to look up the PS3 disc transfer rates) that the PS3 has some part of it that is transferring data slower.
It doesn't matter if you've got a 8-Cylinder monster engine, if you're squeezing out fuel to it through a bendy straw, all that power is going to go to waste.
The PS3's superior Cell processor may be able to outperform the 360 in raw horsepower, but the 360 had a two year head start with Developers optimizing software for it, so it's got a graphical lead simply because developers are more familiar with the machinery.

360 has Halo but PS3 has Metal Gear Solid 4...
it comes down to the games, the two of them have similar games, but which are exclusives?
360 Exclusives include Halo
PS3 exclusives MGS, Resistance (dont know if I care that much about R tho)
So it comes down to
Halo vs. MGS
Personally I like MGS more
what other exclusives are there...
also the graphics are about the same, the differences are so small that you shouldn't even care about graphics so much.
but 360 has red ring of death... out of my four friends with 360s, two got it, one replaced his 360, the other sent it in and got the same one back.

Having said all that, I can't be arsed with Metal Gear Solid either, so the big hitters don't bother me either way.

Look at it this way.
Both 360 and PS3 have hi-definition quality, BUT 360 has only the capability of doing 420 and 720p. The PS3 can hold 1080i and 1080p.
The PS3 comes with a Blu-Ray player so you can get super hi-definition movies, which everyone on this forum must love. And don't believe in the stupid "Netflix" deal with 360. It's terrible.
And the best of all, PS3 has free internet. No paying $60 a month for internet on xbox.
And just because the PS3 doesn't have a lot of games yet, doesn't mean its bad. The 360 didn't have a lot of games when it came out and now look at it.
I own a PS3 and a XBOX 360 and I am ten times happier with the PS3. Also, I have had to get my 360 fixed twice.

PS3 IS BETTER!
It's less than $10 a month. Less than $20 for 3 months. And less than $50 for a 13 months. So what are you tlaking about?

RROD. I think they put it in all the 360's on purpose to happen after a certain time. That way you would sent it to Microsoft and they can check out their hardware and see how everything is holding up.

Why would they spend all that money to put a flaw in their machine that would both make them look bad and cost them millions of dollars to repair them for free?

Wii is for 8 year olds
To be fair, the Wii's crossed a huge divide and introduced a heck of a lot of casual gamers to consoles.
It's a 'party, party, get your mum around and see her wobbling on a Wiifit board at Christmas' console. Nintendo, I salute you for the dumb fun times I've had...
...still ended up buying another console tho... ahem

the Wii....
Wii is what my little 6 year old brother and his friends decide to play, which starts dumb arguments between 6 year olds, which turns into someone crying and saying that they hate each other and aren't friends which means I have to tell the kids to cut the shit out every 5 minutes.
I get the most use out of my PS3 by watching movies. It's an awesome machine, so if your choosing Xbox over it your choosing the xbox for the games library.
PS3 has more then enough games for me to be content, and is an awesome blu-ray player.

Xbox has 86 exclusives while PS3 has 95. Sure , most are junk like naruto on xbox and sports games on PS3 but thats just the count. Plus thats just disk based titles while Xbox and PS3 both have downloadable titles by indie company's. But since there are to many and since i have a life , i didn't count all the downloadable titles.

Xbox. Sure Ps3 might have more exclusives but the only game i ever had any intrest in playing is littile big planet. Besides i dont want to buy a console from a company that is a huge moron. At least Xbox is trying to compet with WII with out trying to rip off the controller.

I share both a PS3 and Xbox 360 with my brother, and honestly, I prefer the PS3 more. I don't game much, except for on weekends, and the PS3 suits my needs better than a 360. It provides an entire media centre, rather than just a game system. Plus it has free interwebz, and Little Big Planet, quite possibly my favorite game ever.

I own a PS3, my neighbor owns a 360, he was a 360 fanboy until he started playing Metal Gear Solid 4 (Xbox fanboys don't get excited about Rising because it wont even be directed by Kojima and it has been changed to "Lightning Bolt Action" so it will be probably more Ninja Gaiden than Metal Gear, and there will be no Snake :(, as soon as we beat MGS 4 he realized how much more powerful the PS3 was and how good the games were, me and him beat a bunch more games and as soon as he saw the trailer for God of War 3, he thinking about selling his 360.

Fable II was a massive let down. It's replaced Fable 1 in my book, as Fable 1 was also a let down from the hype. So I'm still waiting for the Fable II I was promised by Molyneux.
I find the whole 'which console has the bigger penis is better?' arguement stupid. Admittedly I prefer the 360, but the PS3 has got some good titles and developers have actually started using the PS3s superior hardware. Wii doesn't count here, since it's marketed towards the casual gamer/family and Nintendo are geniuses at moneymaking, even if they forget their loyal fans in doing so.
Don't shun your fellow gamer because he has chosen one console and you have the other. We all share the art form that is video games.
