I am personally not a writer. I can write fairly well, but I don't enjoy it at all and I'm sure that a lot of you guys are the same way. Is there a place that you go to get royalty-free scripts, especially ones that aren't plays? The last piece I produced was a one-act but I found, as is obvious, that it was made for a stage, not a camera.

i bet if you bounced some ideas of the IM users you could come up with a script in now time
or maybe someone has a script they don't want anymore

Hmmmm, Well, I am a Writer/Director so I dont have that problem.
But I suppose someone you know might like to write, and you could take one of their stories and adapt it (with permission of course)

Do you know any websites that have royalty-free scripts for short films? There are plenty our there for plays, and yeah I guess I could adapt them, but the problem is that I'm not sure if the authors would give me creative control over the scripts or not.

No matter how you go about it, if you are making someone else's script, something can always go wrong that may disappoint/bother them with your adaption.
Also, try seeing if any of your friends are adept at script writing. You'll be close enough that you can still provide commentary/opinions on script changes and your writer can be included in the rest of the project.

What works for me is not to try and format it at first, just rough draft it, I doodle notes about how it should look, angles, etc... then when you have that use a program like CELTX. I also have to have a quiet calm place to write also. Good luck.

What sort of story are you after?

Something like a drama with a little comedy thrown in. I'd like to work with a horror or action too. Honestly, anything of quality, I just really want to work haha.

Why don't you adapt older stories that are in public domain?
Want something that is dramatic with a little comedy? That describes countless Shakespeare's works right there.

Visit project Gutenberg, TONS of classic works of literature that are in the public domain, SO many great works that are ripe for adapting.

Jack I forgot to mention short scripts. For my class, I have to dish out a project per term, and a term is only like 8 weeks.

There are plenty of shorter stories, and some collections of short stories on the Gutenberg project.

How long should it be... I'm looking to do a short project as an intro into Celtix. Give me some parameters and I'll see what I can do

Running time will probably be around 5-15 minutes.
