i was wondering what kinds of materials look similar when you spray paint them. for instance, will a prop made with cardboard and plastic look like its all made of the same stuff if you spry paint it all the same color?

Short answer, yes. As long as you use a paint with the same finish (matte, metallic, etc.) it should look the same.

It depends on the paint's opacity, and the surface texture of what you are painting. If the card is a matt finish, ('flat' in the US), then it may need a couple of coats to get a shine. If it's abosrbant, then you will get a different finish too. So try and seal porus and matt surfaces with primer first. Plastics, most of which have a 'closed cell' structure, will gloss up a lot easier. The opacity thing dictates the paints ability to cover up whatever colour is being painted over.

Primer young man, primer. Using the right primer on the base material makes all the
difference. You can make cardboard look like shiny painted steel.
