JUST write a script saying the word "like" a lot, Look away from the camera, add a question mark to EVERY single sentence and change the pitch!!!!

I'd never heard of this kid before, but a quick internet search tells me as follows: 'Fred' was a silly little YouTube series that has inexplicably become popular with kids. In response, Zipit, which is some kind of personal messenger (pretty much a PDA with SMS, as far as I can tell), picked him up and he now shills for Zipit in his videos (ergo why he uses that thing in every episode). He wasn't always a shill -- it seems he legitimately became prominent without commercial help.

None of this changes the fact his videos are stupid, obnoxious and lazy. But kids love it. I suspect it has something to do with the perception that it's 'by kids' -- I'm no marketing expert, but a lot of my reading seems to suggest that that demographic loves to see stuff made by them or that they percieve empowers them. Ironically, the crudeness of 'Fred' may actually be in its favour (not that young people can't make strong films).

Looking at the 'most subscribed' section on YouTube is depressing; Smosh, The Miley and Mandy show (lazy vid-casts from Christian fundamentalist tween girls), Linkin Park, sxephil (trite political vid-casts) -- urgh. I'm glad to see HotForWords doing so well, though - she came up with a really novel idea for a program (and must be the only person to ever make back the money on her linguistics degree).

This whole vid-cast thing is inexplicably popular.

I suppose we've never seen any YouTube persona jump to celebrity, though, so maybe we'll see them abuse the right later, though.

That is true. But thats how the media is. They don't care who you are, or what you do. As long as you entertain more than 75% of people. Considering he has 350,000 subscribers.
