It's an imageboard. It has 40-odd boards, the most famous of which is /b/ (random). It's notable for having no registration and the vast majority of users don't opt to have a name. It has a very black sense of humour and a whole series of abstruce memes and unwritten rules, which can make it pretty confounding to a new member.

It's a bit like the Rocky Horror Picture Show. You know, there's all these little rules and mores and expected responses and you can be really out of place if you don't know them. Frankly, I find it a bit tiresome. There's a pretty small repertoire of topics that people go over again-and-again with the same responses. "DO IT {buttercup}{buttercup}{buttercup}GOT," "stick it in the poopar" and "tits or GTFO" all get pretty dull the millionth time (and I mean millionth - there's over 70-million posts). There are a lot of really, truly funny people on there, but they're drowned out by the twats who seem to think regurgitating old humour is a reasonable substitute for wit.

All I know is: Two weeks ago a friend of mine who frequents it said she ran into child porn, real child porn, on it. Someone had posted it and she accidently clicked it, then the next day it was offline for her.

4chan isn't as bad as most people say it is, it's really just /b/. /b/ can be a cesspit of horror at times. I lurked there for a while and really the site isn't that bad, however it's like Furrys, Star Trek geeks and other geek-fandoms, the crazy people fuck it up for everyone else.
