View Full Version : MY NEW EQUIPMENT!

I don't know if the all-caps title was necessary, but who really cares? I'm really excited because I just got a bunch of new equipment!! Like 2 minutes ago I ordered it. :ohsnoes: <I'm acting like that smilie.
I got (start dramatic music)
-A Canon HV30 (with 3 year protection plan ;))
-Rode videomic
-Impact V2500 fluid head tripod
-Hoya ND filter
-Hoya UV, Haze, Protection filter
-Hoya zoom lens (it's called a lens but it's really a filter)
I was gonna get a WA lens too, but: Like yesterday they discontinued the one I was gonna get. So I was gonna get another common one that's used with the HV30. That one is essentially the same one as the other one, but it's a bit bigger (but it comes with a step up ring anyways). But that one's back ordered for 6-10 weeks. I'm probably going to wait, but I might find it somewhere else. I mean, I'm gonna get it one way or another but I just trust B&H so I'll probably end up waiting it out.
OMGOMGOMGOMG.

I just now ordered the stuff a few minutes ago. It's supposed to come on Thursday, so I can't answer your question. But from everyone I've heard from said it was absolutely awesome for the little camera that it is. Also you know how it was a thousand dollars? B&H has it for 780. And B&H is really reliable, they're not a scam site.

:ohsnoes::ohsnoes: Yeah. This week's gonna be the best and worst week ever...
At least I've got another camera to keep me going till then. And we (me and B and D Films) found a nice tripod in B and D Films' house, so we'll probably be messing around that too. It's nothing super special but it's gonna keep us intersted for a while untill my new stuff comes in.

It's not a waste. If you hate it you can sell it on eBay for a lot more.
Anyway, I'm always excited when I get new stuff. My new camera was a ridiculously hard wait, the wait for After Effects was also tough. Now, I'm expecting a 22" widescreen monitor for my computer: I'm pretty anxious for that too.
Have fun reveling in anticipation!

Thanks! We can anticipate together, if that doesn't sound weird... hee hee haha hoho.
Anyways, I've heard great things so I doubt I will hate it. But yeah, I could always sell it if I don't like it. I'm also awaiting AAE. But last time I downloaded it (with the student discount you're only allowed to download it) it broke my computer completely. So I'm kinda scared to try it again.

Where do you get your money?
I have a Sony Sr-42 Handycam. It's allright, but it's not great. I mean like i'd give it a 6/10 or so. It's good for like family events and whatnot, but not for filming movies. It doesn't have a mic input, headphone output, or anything else that really helps. It has a nice amount of manual controls though.
The money is Barmitzvah money.

Yes, I'm happy and lucky. And this (http://picasaweb.google.com/punkandska66/OtherStuffs/photo#5134685697328303794) is my dog.
I'm gonna get tapes tomorrow hopefully and I'll shoot some test footage. We were mostly experimenting with the mic today. My old camera never had a mic input so the mic was pretty interesting to us. You know, experimenting with audio settings and stuff. I'll probably do some artsy-fartsy depth of field tests and 24p and stuff, and I'll put it up on vimeo.

Hey dudes, got a quick question for anyone who owns the Rode videomic:
Ok so it comes with a built in shock mount, which helps a lot, but you can't take it out. But a little bit behind the hot shoe mount there are two small holes. Do you think it would be possible to get a pole and just drill 2 holes in the pole and drop 2 small bolts through the holes in the shock mount and the pole? I can draw a picture on paint if it helps.
Here's an uber rough drawing. Click on it to see it big.

Those two holes behind the hotshoe attach are threaded. They are meant for you to use the mic on a boom pole or a stand. Just pick one and get a hanger bolt that fits that thread size.
It's easier when the mic is perpendicular to the pole, so that it aims at your actors when you hang it overhead - so just use one of the threaded holes.
punkandska66
08-01-2008, 11:35 AM
OK, sweet. But do you think that just one hole will hold it stable? Cause if there's just one hole it will swivel but if there are two it would stay stable, right? Or at least that's what I would think.
elscottomagnifico
08-01-2008, 12:08 PM
It'll be fine with just the one. You just need to make sure you use enough nuts to take up extra space on the bolt you use - it'll allow you to snug the mic into place, so it won't swivel unless you do something awkward.
Note: Two or three is about all it should take.

Aiigt, well I shot some footage. But they only gave me a USB cable with the camera. And I need firewire. So, I gots some questions. There are ports on the camera that say DV/MiniDV. Do I get a cable that goes from that, into firewire? Or do I just get a regualr firewire? And if so, do I plug that into the USB port. I read the manual, but it isn't explained very well. Or I'm just stupid...

That port you described above is the firewire port.
It doesn't go in the usb port.
Just get a regular firewire.

In the manual it says to get a "DV" cable. Are they the same? So I get a normal firewire cable and plug it into the"DV/HDV" port on the camera. And then I plug it into my computer?

DV cable = Firewire Cable
Just make sure to check what type your computer takes (4 or 6 pin). The cam itself takes the smaller 4 pin, so you'll just need the other end to match what your computer needs.

Alright, I have tried uploading it. When I plug it in, the computer knows something is there but nothing pops up asking what I want to do with it. I have gone to my computer and checked removable disk, whatever... So it looks like it's not recognizing it, but the thing is, when I open Vegas it will let me use it as an uber awesome HD webcam. So that's great for video repsonses, but I don't want that. Why won't it show anything?

hey how are u liking the HV30? I was thinking about getting it as a secondary camera for my xha1, not sure if you've resolved the capturing issue yet, but i too am a teen (15) and was just curious quality wise what u thought of the camera, the only thing that bothers me about it is the lack of xlr ins, but i know there is a converter for that anyhow.:hayguyz:
punkandska66
08-02-2008, 09:43 AM
Aside from the fact that I can't get footage on the computer I love it. That issue is probably me or my computer, not the camera. It doesn't have XLR ins but like you said you can get a converter. I bought the RODE videomic with 1/8" in, and it works wonderfully. You really don't kneed any XLR mics anyways, but if you already have them then it's kinda a waste to not use them. Since you have an XH-A1, I'm guessing you have an XLR mic or two already. I think that if you have the money for it (which is a lot less then when it came out) then go for it. It captures true HD (1080 X 1920) has true 16X9, 24p, and a bunch of manual controls. The other thing I like about it is that it has a focus wheel, you don't have to go to the menu and go to fucus etc, etc, etc.
punkandska66
08-02-2008, 10:18 AM
OK, I watched the video instead of readiong the manual. It says I need to change the "STD playback mode" to MiniDV. But the "STD playback mode" isn't available. Like it's there and I can see it, but it's grey and it won't let me change it. NVM, I changed it. But absolutely nothing happened.
w00t, I feel really really stupid. You know how I did the webcam thing, well you use the same window. Except you set the camera to playback (which is what I've been doing, but not in the capture window).

Does anyone know about "tapeonline.com"? They have some pretty good prices on MiniDV. They have the same tapes that I bought at Target for about $4.00 a peice (bought in a pack of two for $8.20 or something), but they have them at 2 dollars and something. Like 10 was 22 dollars. It seems like a really good place to buy in big(ish) numbers. I saw the ad for it on the creativecow forums, so I would imagine it's trustworthy, but does anyone know?

The Videomic records with an 1/8" connection (so it goes into the Mic input). The hotshoe connector on the bottom is just to hold the mic on the cam - the hotshoe is the easiest stable place on the cam to attach to (it's also a uniform size on cams for both cold and hot shoes - powered and unpowered).
