Hi,

In my upcoming feature there is a scene with a news team arriving on a scene of a shooting. To make it look legit I need to have them holding a pro looking camera. So I decided to get a professinal VHS one.

THIS ONE (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PANASONIC-M50-PROFESSIONAL-SVHS-CAMERA-TRIPOD-ACCES_W0QQitemZ140257363002QQcmdZViewItem?hash=ite m140257363002&_trkparms=72%3A1121%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C 240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14)

But I was just wondering what would the actually quality would it produce because it was professinal at one point. (Not for the film but for some nostalgic shorts :D)

If you can still find VHS, then there's only one way to find out. Also, are you sure you want to spend that much money on a prop. Unless you plan on keeping it and actually using it once you're done. Then yeah it'd probably be worth it.

Here's what you do, show the news person holding the camera, and then switch to your HV20 and it should be good quality. You don't have to shoot with the VHS

and Punk I do play on keeping it for nostalgic value and I think it would be fun to shoot some old fashion VHS movies :D

Well then...

DO IT!

Actually, wait for some other people to comment. And watch some old VHS video on youtube. VHS wasn't really that bad. You probably won't be able to tell the difference with a good VHS camera and a "meh" VHS camera. The whole thing with cameras being all different is with digital. With digital everything is different, but I think with VHS footage is more or less the same on most cameras. In my opinion it's like [a bit more than] $300? For a proffesional camera? It looks cool? It still works? Go for it.

Something you could always do if your willing to spend some more money is buy that camera and a small miniDV camera. Tape the mini dv camera to the side of the VHS camera that the HV30 can't see shoot the video with that. Just a wild idea. I think the idea of using the HV for the real footage would be better though.

He want to use it as a prop. But if he's going to invest that much into a prop that works, then he wants to know if he could use it after he's done using it at a prop. You understand? I think you should wait for a few more opinions.

SVHS can produce some decent stuff. My personal thought is that a digital transfer can give VHS stuff a smoother look than digital - can be quite satisfying.

I guess it would be useful to have a vhs camera in your arsenal if you were thinking of doing something involving 'archive footage'. BUT think about the recording heads -what's their condition ?

Hey Speekerphone - can you design a nice looking pro camera prop and show us how to build ? - might save you a lot of cash Enip, and I wouldn't mind one myself!!!

Theres a scene in the film that requires some old VHS footage so I was going to use it for that aswell
