if you have after effects there are effects under generate called beam and 2 different lightnings...they make for a nice ghostbusters effect.
On the actual Ghostbusters they hand-animated it.
I did a short movie with Ghostbusters in it. I think I used two layers of advanced lighting; a thicker orange layer and a thinner blue layer. Then I applied distortion effects to make it aim where I wanted. (Bend, I think) It was for a 48-hour movie competition, so I didn't have time to hand-animate it.
I also did a test once where I did it hand-animated. I drew the beam in Flash, because I like its drawing abilities better than After Effects. I imported the section of the movie that needed beams into Flash, so I had something to trace over, but removed them when I exported, so the exported file would just have the beams. Then I imported the two beams, and make their blending mode "add," blurred them, and added film grain. (There's a lot of simple computer effects that look cooler if you add some noise or grain.)

by adding noise or grain it helps to blend it with you footsge so it doesnt stand out as a perfect image!
But sometimes I'll add a lot more noise or grain than I need to match the regular footage, just because I like the look of it. For anything that's supposed to be solid, I'll use just enough to match the other footage, but it sometimes looks nice for things like energy beams, or ghosts, if you add more grain than you need to match.
