You could just run a time code generator backwards. Just make one the length you need, and put a simple reverse effect on it.

i think the distracting issue really depends on the countdown you decide to use. if its big and bold and sticks out with bright colors people will notice it. It really is up to you.

Living here in Puerto Rico I've had to watch every movie in theaters with big bright yellow spanish subtitles. At first it was distracting but nowadays its like its not even there.

Now I always put subtitles on for every movie I watch.

back to the point you decide when its distracting. then you listen to ppls reactions.
