what's a nice color for flashbacks or day dreams?
should i tint the whole thing yellow? red? blue?
should i make it black and white?
should i play with the lights with a combination of playing with the footage in post?
or hell, anything else to show the audience that the character is having a flashback or a daydream!
HELP HELP HELP PLEASE!!
also, extra points for any suggestions to distinguish a flashback and a day dream (i.e. fantasy vs past reality)?

You don't use a certain color... you use a certain BLUR+GLOW combination. Two different filters.
I will be taking my points now.

Some ways to do it that i've seen a lot, is like Matt said, a blur and glow effect, but i've also seen Reverb added to the video a lot, so it sounds all echo-y.
Also, white vignetting, higher contrast, black and white like you mentioned, and a "Wavy" transition along with a harp noise when it goes in and out of the flashback.
But I really guess it depends on the mood you're going for. Like more serious, bump up the contrast, maybe add a yellow tint, maybe try to do a "Bleach Bypass" effect, along with slowing it down, or something.

If you're going to use the wavy water drop transition like Wes suggested You'll wanna play around with it the Time Remap option (I'm assuming you're using Final Cut Pro). When you first put it in it goes really really fast so when you play it back you're like "What was that?!" it went super fast!
Remember, adding sound makes it look really good. If you decide to dip to white, of course play with it, and maybe add a sound effect like WWSSHHH! Or somehting that sounds good with it.

No idea... I'm only trained with iMovie, WMM, and Final Cut Pro.
I would assume it's called something like that though...

Take out a frame or three a few times every shot, it'll make the memory look more photographic, or focused. Smokin' Aces did that well.

It depends what you want the sequence to be like. For most you want to brighten it up a bit, but if he/she's remembering Omaha Beach you wouldn't do that. But in general you want the picture to be 'haloed' around stuff- so probably blur it a bit too. A lot of people have different opinions on what it should look like though, so keep that in mind.
