Ok, time to fess up to what I haven't been able to tell you so long.

10MMH was really a place to get you guys excited about telling more complex, longer stories, to get you ready for The Best Short Films in the World.

WORD OF ADVICE: Submissions from your Vimeo (http://vimeo.com/) account are preferable, not only because Vimeo is better quality, BUT it allows us to post your video on the Official Indy Mogul Vimeo Page (http://vimeo.com/indymogul), and the TheBestshortfilmsintheworld.com (http://www.thebestshortfilmsintheworld.com/) on top of just posting it on the frontpage blog (http://www.indymogul.com/blog). So something to keep in mind if you want your video to get extra exposure!

-RULES-

1. Content appropriate. Violence is generally ok WITHIN REASON, Reservoir dogs level is generally ok, Hostel level stuff might be pushing the line. No nudity. Keep cussing to a minimum, shits, damns, BASTARDS, crap, etc. are generally OK, but no one wants to hear you just dropping F-bombs for 5 minutes straight. Content will ALSO be judged in context of the video, cutting off someone's ear can be funny or it can be disturbing depending on how it's done. Something done for laughs in someone else's video might be judged inappropriate in another context, so keep that in mind. Drug use, almost all sexual content, and anything that we find particularly disturbing can result in your video being found inappropriate for the show, so try to keep that in mind.

2. No copyrighted music or content (That wasn't made by you). There are lots of musicians here on the forums (http://forum.indymogul.com/showthread.php?t=4694) that are offering their music for free, there are piles of public domain classical music that is awesome, and it's getting easier and easier to make your own music. So really, there is no excuse to have "Hit me baby one more time", bumping in the background while your chainsaw wielding psychopath is chasing your actors around. That's just not bad taste, it can also probably get you sued.

3. SUBMIT USING ONLY THE BELOW SUBMISSION FORMAT, just posting your video without submitting it in the below format will result in me disregarding the entry.

These are a general guideline to start off with, and we reserve the right to change these rules, add to these rules, or take away from these rules as deemed fit for the program.

Is it true that Classical Music is okay to use... I mean I know that the music as in the paper with the notes on is in public domain but can you only use recordings of the song that you are given permission for or record yourself?

classical music is technically public domain, but you have to ask permission from those performing the piece. So really using A San Francisco Orchestra performed Beethoven piece is "illegal". I highly doubt it will ever be penalised however.

The compositions are in the public domain, but there are also recordings of many of the compositions that are ALSO in the Public Domain.

Newer recordings may not be in the public domain, because while they don't own the song, they own the recording of their iteration on the song.

But like I said, while a lot of recordings of classical music aren't in the public domain, there are piles that are in the public domain.

Hey Wes,

I've a couple of questions before I submit;

1/. My short is in French, in keeping with it's theme of 'my first foreign art-house film'. Must my picture have English-language subtitles?

2/. There is a shot of about 3 seconds maximum where a heavy guy is seen in just his under-shorts. As it is explicit that there be no nudity, does this single shot void my entry?

1. I would prefer it to have Subtitles so that it can appeal to as wide an audience as possible, but if the dialogue is not important, or you properly convey the message or what's going on in a non-verbal manner (like a Charlier Chaplin film for instance) then it'll be ok, i'll have to see it first. If it's a problem to subtitle it (I know translating can be a paint), I know a little French and could try to help you if at all possible.

2. If his bottom is covered, if by at least underwear, then it's fine.

Also, Brief Non-Sexualized Partial Nudity COULD be permissible based on the context of the film I would have to see it and judge it, but I think it's best to just steer clear from it, especially if your film features any kind of minor actors or anything, that'll get you in big trouble.

Not anymore, but it can't be feature length status.

Feature Length is generally define (by various agencies) as around 40-80 minutes in length.

So I would say, 45 minutes is pushing it, but that's still not technically a feature, so I would consider it, but it's going to have to be REALLY GOOD to keep my attention that long.
