Thanks, her hair is a bit of a trouble area. I'll have to look more into exactly how Magic Bullet actually works, and try to refine my process.

jeez, I hope I don't annoy any Magic Bullet guys. Love ya Stu :D

Wow, that look great!

I always knew AE could do more CC/grading than people gave it credit for... now I just need to practice CC in AE (wow I'm using lots of acronyms!)

Nicely done. I wouldn't invest in Magic Bullet if I were you, you seem to have it down.

Thanks guys.

After Effects is a very powerful color program. It's got a huge arsenal of effects dedicated to color work. These quick things don't even really scratch the surface. Other programs have this capability too, and I would recommend trying this sort of thing before you're planning on buying anything really. It's not terribly hard to do, I had to take a minute to figure a few things out, and some stuff I had to skip all together (There's no two strip process effect here, I couldn't figure out how to get the look).

EDIT: Round two

They're exaclty the same... You're going to put Stu out of business. But still get his book.

Oh I have his book, and I'm still considering Magic Bullet (if not just colorista). Magic Bullet has a very nice interface, and it's streamlined for color correction, and look building. After Effects isn't.

Magic Bullet offers a range of tools that all do something relative to real world things, or things that are done in higher end color suites. If you want a print bleach bypass, you just put the print bleach bypass effect on your footage. Where as in After Effects, you have to add a curves, and a tint, or a CCcomposite, and tweak the curve, until it looks good, and it's not uniform from shot to shot ext. After Effects has some pretty general effects, that need to be tweaked to perfection, in order to do something that is probably much simpler in Magic Bullet.

Thanks. I might offer a few presets for download. MIGHT.

I'm putting them up against a color chart now to see how accurate they really are.

EDIT: testing continues, left MB right AE

Thanks, if you look down by the hand you can see a bit of an edge.

I wanted to point out that if you're not using After Effects, or a program that can do color work, then Magic Bullet is something you might want to look into. Final Cut can't do this stuff, though now the studio package comes with Color. If you're using express, or another program, and you want more control over the looks, check out Magic Bullet, or colorista.

So I've edited a film in Premiere Pro CS3 and now would like to edit other aspects of it in After Effects CS3. Do I simply open the project file?

Or is there something else that I must do?

Thanks a lot!

You should be able to open a Premiere project with AE. If not, just export the video from Premiere as an uncompressed AVI.

So I've imported the project and when I put the sequence in the composition I get the coloured bars. I'm shooting in HD so does that have anything to do with it?

As far as I know (because I don't shoot in HD), AE CS3 does support HD.

This is what I always do: I take the bare minimum that I'm going to work with from Premiere, export it as an uncompressed AVI, and import it into AE from there. It may not be the quickest or most efficient way to do it, but that's what I do.

When you say uncompressed what do you mean?

Premiere and AE allow you to compress your footage to other file types, such as .mpg, so that it will be a smaller and more easily accessible and editable.

Exporting it as an AVI just means that there is no compression, so you don't lose any (or much, at least) image/sound quality.

The colored bars may be there because you haven't rendered it in AE. I'm not sure though. I have AE CS3 and I know it definitely supports HD.

So here's the problem, I'd much rather do this without exporting video from Premiere.

What exactly are you trying to edit in AE?

If it's a short scene or just one clip, then Copy+Paste that clip into a new Premiere project, then export it as an AVI, then edit it in AE.

*God, I'm an idiot... lol*

The entire film needs aspect ratio editing.

fix'd. ;)

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, can't you just click on the clip you want to export and it will export only that one? I haven't gotten to use premiere in about three months ( :( ) So I don't really remember but I know it's possible in FC.

cant you move the work area bar over the clip/clips you want to export, then select export work area.
