Anyone know how to freeze a shatter effect in midair? Like I want to do this effect where the window gets shattered and it freezes in midair.
PS: Doin this in Cs3, dont know if that matters or not, but whatever.

I don't know, shatter a piece of sugar glass in front of a black screen, then composite that onto your footage, and just freeze frame it in the middle of the shatter.

I would get a black screen and make sure it's really really dark black. That way your clear (or yellowish) sugar glass would stand out. You could even color your sugar glass and then color correct it later. Then composit the footage. But breaking it in a way that you would will be kind of hard. If you want like a small break, shoot it with a BB gun. If you want a big break, you might have to like throw a rock at it and then roto the rock out later. I dunno, I don't have AE.

Lol I could do that, but I mean the shatter effect in After Effects, not in real life. Like the plugin.

heres what i'd do:
1. Apply the shatter effect to the clip.
2. Export it to quicktime.
3. Import back into after effects
4.drag into a new composition
5. split the clip where you want it to freeze (edit>split )
6. Apply a freeze frame to the 2nd clip
this should work, but i'm not positive

i'm pretty sure you can do the effect, and then there's a freeze frame option [search it in the help tool] so that should work the best, and quickest.

You don't want to do it like that, but just as a tip- you never should have to export something from after effects just to bring it back. You can just pre compose.
To freeze the shatter effect you need to first composite the effect in. This already long post would be longer if I explained how to do that, but you'll probably want to use the corner pin setting within the shatter effect.
Next you need to apply time remaping, and the shatter effect works with the built in time remap, so if you change the speed, like slow it down, or slow it down to a complete stop it will do it to the shatter effect, and it will look awesome. I might have forgotten something, I'll test it out myself in a second (not on the right computer), but Shatter works with Time Remaping.

Just a thought. I don't have AE so I'm not sure about this. But can't the built in particle generator make "shard" particles. If it does, I would do it like that, because thn you can control the velocity and direction and stuff.

You can control all of that with Shatter.

Oops, :steve:. Well like I said, I don't have it, so I wouldn't know.

It wont let me time remap. Any ideas?

Yes, I thought that might happen.
Pre compose. It should work smoothly, but if the time remap looks weird, I'll try some things.
