lets say that i get a dvx100b, and it has phantom powered inputs, can i use regular xlr mics and not use batteries, and that phantom power charges it, or do i have to get a phantom powered mic

If the camera has phantom power you can use any XLR microphone. You can turn off phantom power for mics that do not need it.

With phantom power, no batteries are required.

There's some mics that use either or. (I just happened to be searching for mics earlier and saw them).

I have the Azden SGM-1x. It uses only battery power, no need (or want) for phantom power.

You'll be fine with any XLR microphone. Some actually sound better running of of phantom power like the Rode NTG2 or NT3. But some mics (not many) are a little weird and require the battery to be in place even when using phantom power to complete the circuit.
