View Full Version : Liquid latex woes

I'm doing makeup for a film this weekend. I called every crafts and art store in the area around where we're filming. I asked for liquid latex, and as soon as I do, the person on the phone goes from polite and friend to useless, repeats it with this mixture of confusion and disdain ("... liquid latex, sir?..") like I just called up and said "yes, I'm looking for a dildo big enough to tame a mule". Then, they always say "we don't have anything like that", despite the fact that their tone of voice and the way the repeated my request makes it very, very obvious that they have no idea WHAT the fuck I'm talking about, so they really wouldn't KNOW if they have anything "like that" because they don't know what it is.

And a number of "hobby and craft" stores don't even answer the damn phone, or their phone line has been disconnected. Pay the goddamn phone bill once in a while.

Just thought I'd repeat my experience, I thought someone might find it funny.

That sucks man. If it wasn't for this weekend I'd suggest getting it online, but I dont think it'll be shipped in time. Have you tried any seasonal halloween stores? I dont know where you live, but by me there are at least three that I know of within driving distance.

Not sure why this was moved to questions, considering it's not a question, just an experience...

But anyway, nah, no halloween stores around here. The place they're filming is 2 hours away, and I did wind up finding out that there's a Spirit Halloween center there. However, I had to call 10 different numbers to get the right number... Every yellowpages website listed a different number, and even the Spirit website store locator listed two old numbers. I had to go on CareerFinder, where there was a managers position listing open, and call their supervisor's cell phone to get a working phone number for the store itself. Ridiculous. But they had it.

Now to find that 1/4" foam everyones talkin about...

I had a similar experience but with Dry Ice. I couldn't find it anywhere. When I called a store and asked if they had dry ice they were silent for a while then said let me transfer you.

My favorite was when they lady said yes and I said are you sure it is "dry ice". She said, "well it hasn't melted yet". lol.

They I tried to explain that dry ice is frozen carbon dioxide, not water. That didn't work.

But after about 25 calls I finally found some.

Good luck.

HAHAHA. funniest thing Ive read all day. Where I work, I used to take orders over the phone. Well, in our catalog we have different prices for items depending on the quantity you buy with the quantities listed next to their prices. This lady calls up and asks what the numbers mean. I explain to her that 37-72 is 8.95ea, 13-36 is 9.95ea, and 1-12 is 12.95ea. She then asks me what is the price if she gets less than 1-12.

Stupidity should be painful.

LOL. I think people try to sound smart but end up making themselves look even more stupid.

Wal-mart always has it. They keep it in a big square chiller near the front... just ask customer service for help.

Thats what I heard, but I called 3 wal-marts by my house and each one transfered me to at least 3 different departments then said "Ya, we dont carry it."

Don't bother calling... Most of the time when time I have called any store to see if they have a lesser known product in stock I get a "no" from them, but when I go take a look around for myself I always find it.

I was looking for a hockey mask, a la Jason Voorhees, for a show my old band played on Friday the 13th (my birthday was on the 9th, and a friend drunkenly knocked me into a kitchen table, I had to get 5 stitches on my lip, so I was embarrassed).

I called like 15 different places. One was a "sports club." The woman said "oh, no, honey, we don't carry anything like that here, we're just a sports club, we sell other stuff." I said 'like what,' and she paused and said "well... just booze."

As for my experience this weekend, went to Spirit, and got the girl at the counter to help me find my way to the set (6 miles away). She got me lost for two hours.

And their latex is runny as shit. It's like super-watery pancake mix and it takes FOREVER to dry.
