Depends the kind of wings you want, and if you want them to be movable.
But for basic wings, make a harness under the actors shirt for support, you can make it out of duct tape turned inside out, but just attached to his body, over his upper waist, and over his shoulders, typical support harness.
On the back, I would suggest a balsa wood frame. You can make the wood kind of thick, but the trick is building the support going from the harness to the wings.
But, the harness, you want a thick strip going around the upper chest under your arm puts, supports going over your shoulders, then another strip going down closer to your waist.
Get a thin piece of ply wood, i'd say no more than a half inch thick, about the length of the back, from the shoulders to the waist, yet no wider than the back.
Screw the harness, to the piece of plywood,
With the screws of course pointed out into the wood.
For the front of the harness, cut the tape, (You'll want the tape pretty thick, I would say at least each strap 4 layers, accomplish this by wrapping the tape pointing stick side OUT, and wrap and wrap, when it gets to the 4th layer, cut the tape, then point it stick side in, and wrap it around to seal the sticky in.
Cut a slit in the front (Or the side, depends on the costume, if it's tight fitting in the front, make it out of the way), and poke a few holes in it, and run some twine or shoelace through the holes, and tie it together like a shoe.
But, the balsa wood, hopefully it's kind of thick for the main support structure of the wing. Where it is going to screw into the wood, cut it in half.
http://img54.imageshack.us/img54/764/woodyw1.jpg
See like that? Just cut a piece out, where there is a flat section to the wood.
Take that flat section and lay it against the back of the plywood, and one against screw outwards, into the wood, you don't want a tip of a screw pushing through.
Put put some wood glue underneath it, and just screw it together.
So you'll have these two long sticks pushing off your back like two big bunny ears.
How long they are and what angles they shoot off at are up too you, whatever you think looked right.
NOW, get to word.
Put your actors costume on over this, you'll need slits in the back to fit the wings in the cloths.
You can just start layering feathers over them if they are going to be angelic wings, or stretch butcher paper, or plastic wrap over them for more bat-like wings.
For the supports, for bat-like wings, spray them with a dark color, and lay some paper mache on them to give them a textured surface, and some hair, and other stuff.
And form the tips of the wings into a point, or add some paper mache on the end to give it a more angled end instead of a flat end like most balsa wood.
Also, you'll need the secondary supports for bat wings, get a series of smaller pieces of wood, drill holds into the bigger piece, and have them pointed down, get some wood glue, and stick it on the end of each support and stick it up into the main support.
You'll want the screw hold to be the SAME SIZE as the secondary supports coming off of it.
Over the secondary supports, stretch the plastic wrap, and give it a gross brown look with a thin layer of brown latex paint.
Make sure it's not opaque unless you want it to be.
TO make wings that can rise up, put a joint in the middle of the main supports, and have stage hands push them into frame while crouching behind the actor, they can do this with little sticks or wires, to keep themselves out of the way.
With Angel wings, you don't really NEED extra supports like with bat wings (because you can't see them), but if you need to run with them on, it's a good idea to have the secondary supports.
You can get a kind of big back of feathers from a hobby story, just keep layering and gluing them on, and it shouldn't look that bad.
Use Bats and Eagles and other flying animals for reference.

DAmn!, I'm not allone!, I designed a simaler pair of angle wings that I still have yet to make! I have a very rough design sketch on my myspace .
It's crude as hell!!! http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage&friendID=20524330&albumID=818161&imageID=12583826 and if that link does not work
myspace.com/invt2085 (http://www.myspace.com/invt2085) it's in the pic folder titled art.
Allso a Secondary Hindge at the the back would work to make them more compact.
The pic is called Indy idea.

If the wings were big and could fold like Angel from X-man 3 and like 5'6 long and can strap on like a backpack. That'd be cool. Or like Demonic or Gargoyle/Dragon wings but I think that then less people could use them for there movies. That would make a great episode!

Cause Flesh Tear in the old school Day of the Dead ara was Turky flesh painted with non deadly paint(one of many methods) and I have a very crude/Rough desigin I'm gonna build at some point for angel wings, it could allso be modified for demon wings aswell.

Have a look at this set of wings (http://www.primalvisions.com/Pages/psubpages/angelwings.htm) used for a stage show.
They fold & flap (non-realistically) under pneumatic control. There's a photo of the creator working on one of the armatures without the "feathers" and you can see it's a pantograph-style linkage with some pneumatic cylinders to change from the folded & expanded configuration.
I bet they weigh a ton, though - they're huge and made of steel.

the only thing i can think of is to sew something like cardboard to the back of a shirt so i will say in place and al that, and then glue tons of feathers to it. to make it spread out/flap, possibly have someone off camera with some thin thin fishing line attached to the wings?
i dunno, thats what came to my mind.

well something the other threads dont offer as a possibility that ive used is to make the structure of the wings out of rope. then you can make the feathers or whatever the wings inners are made of out of a fabric (like a shower curtain or somthing would work). then because you used rope as the structure you can fold the wings up to you actors back/arms (whatever) and you can have someone behind them pull on the rope that leads into the wings. when the rope is taught the wings will unfold. and tada... wingspan
heres a little diagram (hope the pic comes out ok)

The kind of build you want is going to be expensive. I mean, that is if you don't want it to look real cheap. You can find pre-made wings in various places and websites. And if you want to build some wings yourself, you're going to end up spending a lot of money on big feathers.
michaelbak

I really want it to look good so i'll pay.
elscottomagnifico
04-19-2008, 07:45 PM
Specifics of how you'll use it and how you want it to look will change how hard it is to do.
Do you want the large defined feather look or the smaller loose feather look for the overall wings?
What types of scenes will you use the flapping in or at least how would you make use of flapping wings (will they be silhouettes, from the front, from the back, etc.)?
Other than those specifics, a basic set of wings could be made from a wire frame with a cloth covering to attach the feathers to (to keep the weight down - flapping moves will be easier to pull off if the wings are lighter). That basic setup can then be attached to an old backpack (cut it apart to get rid of the actual bag portion and keep the back with straps - it would be best if it also had the waist strap for stability)
Skycarl
04-19-2008, 07:59 PM
What kind of range do you need for them to flap? A hinge and rod system may
be the way to go to get that. By using a push-pull rod powered by a robot DC motor
could make it work. You'd have to build a secure harness as a platform but it could
work. With a lot of work. Good luck.

In a scene a man sprouts Angel Wings then they flap and in the next scene he is shown close up of him flying away with the wings in the behind him.

Do you want it on your arms, or like the link above?

Something like that would be possible with alot of work. Since flapping won't be a major part of the scenes but more of an add on, you can go with hinges mentioned before and just be creative with your shots to let someone out of frame move them so they flap. Also make another point on the wings pinable or at least velcro/snap secured (to the strap/backpack frame) so that in the other scenes you can keep them fairly solid.
The main part you can make as I suggested, with an old backpack of some sort. Re enforce the backpack (wood or something sturdy attached would let you add the hinges and mount points for the wings) and then add a layer of white fabric over that to blend it with the wings.
Then make the wings out of a fairly robust wire frame with a layer of white fabric sewn over it. Then attach large fake white feathers (check craft stores and the internet to find some you like - you can tack them all on with glue; starting from the bottom and working up so that all the feather tips show and the glued points are hidden) and for the tops where the feathers are more fluffed than defined use one of those fake boas (again search online or in craft stores)

You can also check out suggestions in that thread. With the wire frame setup in the thread, you can add as much depth to the wings as you want without adding much weight - and you can also flatten/reshape them easily.
If you follow the demon wings episode, just don't use latex and, instead, glue feathers to the outside. You also don't have to use foam, as you don't need something that will latex well - so you can use any light cloth.

I can hazard a guess at a Maximum ride fanfilm.
The thing is, bird wing are vastly different from the demon wings...

He said angel wings, not bird wings. Devil wings with white feathers on them would look fine.

fashion a simple harness out of a belt. hot glue a hinge to it, and make out the basic shape of the top of the wings using cardboard (a couple layers of it, like about six) screw the cardboard "spines" onto each end of the hinge. Seperate a part of the layer tofit in the lower curve of the wing (one layer should do it) skin them out with shower curtains, here's a good link for fake feathers, www.ostrich.com
