View Full Version : Your Favorite Horror Films

In preparation for the two weeks worth of horror films on THE BEST SHORT FILMS IN THE WORLD, I figured I'd pose the question:

What are your favorite horror films?

Or more specifically your favorite MOMENT in these horror films?

I watched Kubrick's The Shining on the big screen last weekend....SO GOOD.

I still have yet to see the shining.

All of the Hannibal Lecter films in my opinion are great, my favorite being Red Dragon. The story is great, and I love how through watching the movie you get a glimpse of every character's psychological profile.

Some people have told me those don't count as horror films for some reason so if your one of those ppl... i pick The Omen. Scary subject matter and a grisly film, I recommend it to any one who hasn't seen it.

There's tons of really great ones out there it's always hard to just pick one.

I've seen soooo many horror films that picking my favorite will take a while. I can say one of my favorite moments is at the end of the original Friday the 13th. The scene where Alice wakes up the next morning on the boat in the middle of the lake and young Jason jumps out of the water to grab her. I never jumped so high in my life.

The Hills Have Eyes (remake), wasn't that scary, but very intense.

I love the Shining as well. I like a lot of classics like The Exorcist, Psycho (one of my favourite movies ever), and The Omen. Hmmm... Nightmare on Elm Street, Dog Soldiers, Cube (if that counts), the Evil Dead trilogy.

I also am a sucker for really cheesy old b-horrors! Bucket of Blood is one of my favourites of those because it's hilarious. I just watched one from 1934 called Maniac while knitting the other day. Anything with Vincent Price in it is great, as well.

:D

One of my favorite horror movies is definitely the Exorcist, the version with the added scenes. Once you see the girl do the spider walk down the stairs it sticks with you.

The Amityville Horror (original) is also up there on my favorites list because everything about the movie is creepy. The new one was good but not as good as the original because I think that they were going for more "jump scenes" and they also deviated from the original story.

the lawnmower scene in Dead Alive.
When Micheal Myers kills the guy with the glasses in the original Halloween.
All of The Shining.
The Achille's tendon stab in Pet Sematary.
When the first attack happens in [REC] and most of the last 15 minutes.
The end of Friday The 13th.
The scene in the first Nightmare on Elm Street, where Freddy is halfway coming out of the wall.
The guy who had his limbs twisted in Saw III.
"Is it safe?" drilling scene in Marathon Man.
Most of Alien.
And most of The Descent.

OH YES IT IS!

Also, I thought this was a list of the "scariest horror film". Apparently it's not, so here's few more films I'd like to list:

- Brain Dead
- The Shining
- The Hills Have Eyes (remake)
- Dawn Of The Deads (remake)

and

- Bad Taste (I don't think it's horror at all... Well, it still kicks ass!)

Get ready, here I come:

Fright Night - Not only the best horror movie, but one of the best movies ever.
Dead Ringers - Possibly my favorite film, but not quite as fitting in the horror genre.
Videodrome
The Rocky Horror Picture Show - The first Friday night of every month is the best I've ever had.
Peeping Tom - Sheer classic and one of the first ever slasher flicks.
Blue Velvet - Like Dead Ringers, not so much a horror flick as it is a very disturbing thriller.
American Psycho - The death of Paul Allen is one of my most-watched scenes.
Nightbreed - Pure fun, and featuring David Cronenberg as the villain, directed by the one and only Clive Barker.
Hellraiser
Pet Semetary - That fucking kid!
A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors
A Nightmare on Elm Street
Friday the 13th Part 2
Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter
Friday the 13th
Halloween
The Prowler
Dead Alive
The Bird with the Crystal Plumage
Deep Red
Inside
Evil Dead 2
Scream
The Shining
2001: A Space Odyssey
Session 9 - One of the only movies to ever scare me, right above...
The Exorcist III - Not particularly scary, but that one hospital scene with those fucking scissors was burnt into my memory and is easily the best jump scare ever.
Phantasm
New York Ripper
Maniac Cop
Eyes Without a Face
Night of the Living Dead
Dawn of the Dead (original)
Day of the Dead
Land of the Dead (if just for Dennis Hopper's performance)
Se7en
Return of the Living Dead
Feast
Zombi 2
Psycho
Psycho II
The Birds
Rear Window
The Descent
Alien
My Bloody Valentine
Black Christmas (original, obviously)
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original)
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 - This one's a comedy delight.
Hatchet for the Honeymoon - An underrated classic available in your local dollar bin.
976-Evil
976-Evil 2
The Wicker Man - The original is not only disturbing, but a fantastic musical!

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Holy shit, I can't believe I forgot the Sleepaway Camp trilogy. I deserve the worst for that.

And Cannibal Holocaust, while a good satire, lost me with the actual animal violence. With all of those great special effects, I don't see why Deodato had to do it for real.

I own that on DVD. The real life animal carnage was gruesome. The body on a stick was some nice SFX though. I even have a poster for the anniversary edition signed by two of the actors. On an interesting note, Sylvester Stallone's son Sage was not available to play Rocky Jr in Rocky Balboa due to prior commitments. Those commitments were helping prepare the anniversary release on Cannibal Holocaust.

Horror is probably my second favorite genre.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre '76-When Leatherface pops that guy in the head, then drags him through the doorway and slams it shut.
Friday the 13th Part 6:Jason Lives -When Jason smashes that girls head into the metal wall.
Phantasm -The Sphere.
Halloween 4-The shotgun impalement.
Friday the 13th Part 5-The motorcycle decapitation.
Army of Darkness-The pit-fight!
Shaun of the Dead-The bar scene with the Queen song.
Dawn of the Dead-When Peter punches that zombie, then grabs it and throws it over the edge and into a pond.

Horror is basically my life and I try to live it as scary as possible. By doing that, I watch MANY, MANY horror movies so its nearly impossible for me to choose... but I'll do my best in trying...

My fave horror films have to be:

American Psycho (2000) - The whole film is great, mostly highlighted by Christian Bale's earth-shattering performance, but my favorite scene would either be Paul Allen's death scene or the scene toward the end where Bateman (Bale) admits all of his terrible crimes to his lawyer's answering machine.

Evil Dead II (1986) - My handle isn't "EvilDEAD326" for nothing. I love all of the Evil Dead franchise but Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn is always my fave. Best scene would be Ash vs. Hand, you know the scene where Ash fights his possessed hand. And then of course the scene later where he attaches the legendary chainsaw to his stump.

Audition (1999) - Takashi Miike's Japanese classic is too creepy, eery and all-around too fucked up to not mention. Favorite moment would be the scene where the girl is waiting by the phone for the main character's call and when the phone rings... beat... and then the burlap sack behind her starts to roll around and what sounds like a tiger growl is heard. The most fucked up scene though (I couldn't drink anything for nearly a day after watching it) would be when she feeds the thing that comes out of the sack her vomit, which is very reminiscent of milk... ecchh... gross.

John Carpenter's Halloween (1978) - It's the daddy of modern day slashers. The beginning of a long line of great slashers. And it's one of the best films of all-time. The atmosphere, the creep factor... and the basic unease and unknowing of what's happening and the questions that arise while watching the first film (Who is Michael Myers?) is astonishing. John Carpenter sets his genius in stone with this film.

Hostel (2005) - I may be the only one to ever admit this... but I love Eli Roth. The man is who I want to be. A filmmaker... of horror films. Hostel is scary, funny, somewhat sexy and very exciting and surprising action oriented towards the end. A great modern horror movie with a great vengeful ending, reminiscent of the scene in Pulp Fiction where Marsellus Wallace gets "medeviel".

Shaun of the Dead (2004) - I know it's a comedy, but its too good not to mention. Hilarious and the gore effects are surprisingly well-done. Simon Pegg, Edgar Wright and Nick Frost are all Gods among men when it comes to spoof films. Hot Fuzz was amazing as well by the way.

Christine (1983) - I took a real liking to this film when I first saw it. I guess maybe it was the realistic scenes in the high school and the relationships and character that I could relate to being a teenager, but I really, really enjoy this film. It actually was scary in parts, my favorite scene being when Christine re-animates herself from a beat-up piece of crap to a brand new, freshly painted machine. John Carpenter meets Stephen King = legendary.

Honorable mentions: Halloween III: Season of the Witch, Stephen King's It, A Nightmare on Elm Street III: Dream Warriors, The Mist, Se7en, Army of Darkness, Saw, Saw II, Dead Silence, The Devil's Rejects, Day of the Dead, Shutter (2004 Thai Original), The Hills Have Eyes (both remake and original), High Tension, My Bloody Valentine, Feast, The Faculty, The Crow (horror?) and oh so much more...

The best and most interesting zombie movie I've seen.

I still haven't seen 28 Days Later, but weeks oh man the scene in the beginning where the guy leaves his wife behind, its so good the music comes into play like crazy in it. And the snipers shooting everyone during the outbreak? classic right there.

I forgot to bring up a movie that I really really enjoyed. Anyone seen Shutter? I saw the remake tho. I rented the blu-ray and watched that movie like "Wow what a great movie!" While watching it I could just see how the screenplay was so well written. I think it was dope but I guess i'mma have to check the original as well.

There's literally hundreds of movies I could mention here. I just love horror films like no other genre and keep wachin' as many scary flicks as I can. Some of my faves include... I especially got a weak spot for trashy, 80s styled b-movies, they're not exacatly frightening in most cases, but almost always highly entertaining. Here's some of my faves.

Rock'n'Roll Nightmare[b] - The whole movie's awesome, but if I had to pick one particular scene, I'd settle for Thor's epic battle with the devil.

[b]Slime City - Again, the big finale.

The Dead Next Door - Nonstop zombie madness from start to finish.

I Was A Teenage Zombe - Everything including Mussolini and the part towards the end when the nerd calls the bully a "dick".

Street Trash - Shoplifting scene.

Toxic Avenger - The whole movie is just freakin' awesome!!

Zombie Flesh Eaters - Zombie fights shark underwater & Eye poke scenes.

The Beyond - The scene with the spiders eatin' someone alive.

Jaws - Whenever the shark is about to kill a new victim.

Return Of The Living Dead - The whole movie is awesome. But I like especially the party on the graveyard.

Shock Em Dead - Angel's audition for the band, the scene where Angel takes over the band and the scene where he gets beaten up by his landlord are my faves.

Ghoul School - Teacher: "You have to do what I say. I'm more experienced then you and I'm your teacher". Student: "Yeah, but you're also a dick". + The training of the basketball team.

Man-Eater - Scary as hell.

House Of The Dead & Bloodrayne - Yeah, I gotta admit I'm an Uwe Boll fan.

Black Sheep - When the sheep go crazy and attack everyone at the press conference.

Planet Terror - The rocket jump!!

The Cottage - The kills & everything with Jennifer Ellison.

Hatchet - Victor Crowley on a killing spree.

Severance - When the rest of the group fires their paintball guns at Gordon.

My Name Is Bruce - Everything! Bruce Campbell is freakin' awesome in this flick.

Re-Animator - The finale.

[b]Halloween[b] - Whole movie.

You're not entirely alone, hombre. While I think Eli Roth the person is a tad too arrogant, I do think he's a very fun filmmaker who makes quality B-movies that would be praised had they been made 20 years ago.

Additionally, you mentioned Planet Terror and I think I'll be the only one here to say I prefer Death Proof. Two best parts:

Stuntman Mike: Well, Pam... Which way you going, left or right?
Pam: Right!
Stuntman Mike: Oh, that's too bad...
Pam: Why?
Stuntman Mike: Because it was a fifty fifty shot on wheter you'd be going left or right. You see we're both going left. You could have just as easily been going left, too. And if that was the case... It would have been a while before you started getting scared. But since you're going the other way, I'm afraid you're gonna have to start getting scared... immediately!

and

Stuntman Mike: Hey, Pam, remember when I said this car was death proof? Well, that wasn't a lie. This car is 100% death proof. Only to get the benefit of it, honey, you REALLY need to be sitting in my seat!

Did I mention Planet Terror? Oh, didn't recall. Yeah, I did like Planet Terror more than Death Proof but only by the tiniest fraction of a percent. I can't deny the great Quentin, and he did go all out for that film. Plus I own a Death Proof shirt from when Grindhouse was released, so I do still LOVE Death Proof... it's just that I love Planet Terror a little bit more.

Oh, and those two scenes you mentioned were probably Stuntman Mike's best two lines in the film, I agree.

Oh and about what you said about Eli Roth: I pretty much whole-heartedly agree. Everyone else seems to think he's an arrogant bastard as well... but I don't really see it. I guess a little, but aren't we all sometimes? And I learn a lot from his commentaries and featurettes, so I really appreciate all he's done. I own all of his films as well.

You could go even further than that and note the old Italian giallo films, like Deep Red and The Bird with the Crystal Plumage as the grandaddies to the modern slasher genre. Hell, the great-grandfather could be Powell's Peeping Tom or even the great Eyes Without a Face.

I have to say that my favorite horror movie is Dog Soldiers. It's probably the best werewolf movie I've seen. Great script. Great movie. Very inventive for a werewolf movie which normally follows a more psychological angle. This is more like Aliens or Night of the Living Dead…but with werewolves. That doesn't even give it justice. I think that because it's been shown on the Scifi channel before that it has been seen by some as a scifi original shit-fest but it's a well made and original film.

Kaygee
10-24-2008, 08:33 AM
Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? is a great psychological horror though if your idea of a scary movie is some guy throwing blood at a camera for an hour and a half then it probably isnt for you.

Dog Soldiers wins simply for its basic premise: The British Army versus Werewolves

The Thing still gets a good scare out of you if you havent watched it in a long time and you turn the lights down.

And it doesnt matter how many times I see it, Alien still scares the crap out of me.

my horror movie and almost my fav movie of all time is John Carpenter's Halloween. I remember watching it when I was 9 years old and hideing behind my couch a lot. I can't say there was a certin scene that really got me except for the scene where laurie is running across the street. Other then that the whole movie is always really tense even the scenes that are in the day.

I think a lot people try and say obscure scary films to sound hip and like they know shit about movies but then they overlook the fact that these movies are just terrible.
i know. i feel that way about nightmare on elm street and friday the 13th. i genuinely hate those movies.
actually, a hate all slashers except for halloween.

My top 10, but in no particular order because they are all awesomesauce;

The Devils Rejects

BEST MOMENT - The opening scene of the Firefly clan under siege from the police forces

Evil Dead 2

BEST MOMENT - Bruce Campbell's hand becomes possessed, hilarity ensues

Martyrs

BEST MOMENT - Revenge is a dish best served cold, especially during family breakfast with a shotgun

The Lost Boys

BEST MOMENT - Sam & the Brothers Frog sneak into the vamp's lair, staking one and narrowly escaping an enraged Jack Bauer

Halloween (original)

BEST MOMENT - The opening POV shot of a young Michael Myers taking lives

REC

BEST MOMENT - Just before they make a break for the penthouse, a quick look into the stairwell reveals nothing but infected maniacs

Dawn of the Dead (original)

BEST MOMENT - The whole 'barricade the doors with stolen trucks' sequence

The Exorcist

BEST MOMENT - Doctor arrives, screams heard upstairs, bedroom door opens on room full of stuff flying around

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (original)

BEST MOMENT - Guy enters house looking for a phone, trips, Leatherface appears in doorway before him... it's Hammer Time

Nosferatu

BEST MOMENT - There is no best moment, it's simply best from start to finish

I am a bit biased because I am a zombie fanatic, and very steeped in the genre. But...

- Night of the Living Dead ('68)
- The Crazies ('73)
- The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue ('74)
- Jaws
- Martin ('77)
- Suspiria ('77)
- Dawn of the Dead ('78)
- Evil Dead ('80)
- Creepshow ('82)
- Re-Animator ('85)
- Return of the Living Dead ('85)
- Day of the Dead ('85)
- The Fly
- Evil Dead 2 ('87)
- American Psycho ('00)
- Planet Terror ('07)

There's more, but... You get the picture.

Obviously has my vote for actual SCARY. Sure there's lots of splatter films, but they're not scary: they're just gruesome. Gruesome I can do with a mouth full of gummi worms. I've stared at too many autopsy photos to be scared of that.

A tie between The Evil Dead & An American Werewolf in London.

Scene in The Evil Dead:
The classic tree rape scene, you won't get that in any other horror film.

Scene in An American Werewolf in London:
One would think I would choose the famous transformation scene, but the dream sequence with the Nazi Werewolves was not only priceless, but a shock that came out of nowhere!

honestly, I'm the weirdo who gets scared by little things, and not really the gore factor, I've scared a few people by laughing at some those actually.

an example is in the original halloween ( haven't seen the re-makes yet) when the guy in the cemetary is telling the story about a guy who killed his family. then in the original black & white House on haunted hill, which I unfortunatly didn't get to see all of, but not before the infamous room searching scene. the movie is from the 50's so no big deal "ooh lets search this dark room with candles." turn around and there's a scary looking old woman looking like shes going to attack, I screamed like a little child, then she floats out of the room. haha! the best!

but one that I've loved since I was 10 was the cheesy Willam Castle classic "The Tingler" you could see the strings, but that's what makes it kind of fun, plus they colored the blood in the B&W film bright red. eerie when the faucets run blood and a bathtub full of it.

The machinist caught me off guard, great movie. and if you want something that's kind of a mix of fatal attraction and Hostle...Audition. I'll never look at a dog bowl the same way after that. *shudder*

Those commitments were helping prepare the anniversary release on Cannibal Holocaust.
is cannibal holocaust a good movie??? iv heard of it all over the place but i never really looked for it. I happen to be 14 as ov now, do you think that a mother or father would object to their son watching a movie such as that if I already watch films such as silence of the lambs friday the 13th dawn of the dead and so on.

I feel like I should update this:

I had "An American Werewolf in London" & "The Evil Dead".

Additions:

"The Wolf-Man" (1941) - Its been a favorite of mine since I was 5, when my mom got me into Universal Monsters. Now at the age of 21, they never seem to get old, including Lon Chaney Jr's Wolfman.

"Let The Right One In" - A vampire movie that isn't like any other (gay-light) vampire movie.

"Evil Dead 2" - perfect amount of scares and laughter.

"Army Of Darkness" - just awesome

"Trick 'r Treat" - the Pulp Fiction of Halloween horror films.

"John Carpenter's Halloween" - The Godfather of Halloween horror films

Drag Me to Hell - Sam Raimi still proves he can scare us with funny gags.

I LOVED the scene in Dawn of the Dead where the bikers came in. God was that an amazing movie, along with NOTLD. I tried to get into the Return of the Living Dead series, but just so dated, and not in the good way.

Also not that much of a horror movie anymore, but the original King Kong, not the 76 one either, that was terrible.

Oh, and who can forget these:
Plan 9 from Outer Space
The Brain that Wouldn't Die (Hilarious, you can watch it for free on archive.org)
Nosferatu
Shining
Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
White Zombie
I Walked With a Zombie (yes I love zombie flicks, including the Voodoo ones.

Shocking, isn't it? I mean c'mon, William Goldman wrote the script!

I really enjoyed "Anti-Christ" as a sheer art/horror film. Really bizarre.
