4 or more gigs of RAM, 3.0 Ghz or up dual core processor, Nvidia 9000 or up graphics card.

I would wait for Nehalem. The dual cores out perform the current quad cores.

If you don't have much experience learn on what you have before you spend any major money on a computer. You may realize that you don't enjoy editing very much and don't want or need an expensive dedicated editing computer. The specs also depend on the software you want to use. You could go get a $200 iBook with iMovie '06 or something, and it would have firewire.
Just my $0.02!

what i meant when i said i dont have much experience I meant that i didnt have much experience building computers, not making videos. I actually have a lot of experience editing, and I enjoy it a lot. Sorry I was unclear.

Building a PC is not all that hard actually. any number of bare bones kits should be of help to you. I suggest looking at tiger direct. They usually have some great deals.
