Hmmm...
Patience.
lots of patience.
Without it, you would pretty much die.

okay a few things. from an experianced stopmotionguy.
1!!!!! make sure you have a lighting fixture such as a lamp or reading light or something, and MAKE SURE IT IS STABLE. If your light changes angle during your project it will mess up the video.
2!!!!!!! tape your lego base to the ground. this is another object that can shift during shooting and mess up a video.
3!!!!!! if you aren't making the pictures really close up so it just shows the lego town or whatnot, use somekind of backround. Kind of hard to explain. Basically, if you are shooting in your room, make sure none of your room is showing in the shots. I use the lid to a very large plastic bin. The lids white, so it looks alright.
4!!!!!!!! as everybody says, it takes patience
5!!!!!!! YOU DON"T HAVE TO USE A VIDEO CAMERA. Everbody thinks you do because they think you can't make a movie with a regular camera. Use a photo camera. Your shits will look much better. As to how to make a vid, there's this cool product called Boinx Istopmotion thats just for that. It doesn't cost that much, either.
So, I hope that was more helpful than your basic "it takes time"
I have a good size table (4 feet x 4 feet) that is a big solid lego top (so I don't have to use clay, etc. to hold up the minifigs.) I have some example of stuff i've done in the past if you really want me to post it.

I dabbled in stop motion but its just such a mission. i went to a workshop and made this crappy little short when i was 13. Not lego but paper, like south park.

I tried some stop motion, but know someone (only through the magic of T3H Internet) that found a lot of good info @ Brickfilms.com. So, as BCkrick said, go there.

Jacob, I'm interested how that happened. Did you have really hot lights too close? In my 2+ years of brickfilming I've never encountered anything like that.

You probably already know this... but make sure if you use a video camera, don't stop recording whn you're changing positions, cuz then it might move slightly, and you'll look like an idiot. Or if your battery sucks, and you down't wanna keep charging it, or you're too far away from an outlet, just get a piece of particle board and tape it on. AND BE PATIENT!!!! like everybody else said.
