Erik is sitting across from me, frantically editing next week's episode. I think it's almost done.
He built two space ships, and then used a green screen to make them look like they were magically floating in SPAAACCEeee. I guest-star in the test film. (shh don't tell anyone)

Build as in, virtual model?
No 3d modeling or anything, it's made out of bits of random things and then moved around via string. Sort of like they did in the original Star Wars movies, but even more low budget :D

I noticed Eric is using Final Cut. Which means he has a mac. Which means he is even more awesome than before. Which, kiddies, is hard to do.

I really hope this episode has pointers on shooting miniatures as well as building them. That's something I've wanted to know for ages!

Oh ok, I was gonna say, modeling would be slightly past Indy.

Awesome. I can't wait to see it. IndyMogul got me thinking of a film and a friend of mine are doing a film, about to finish the script, then copyright it and such. We are doing it to distribute. We have no budget, well we have some just have to do what we can etc.
Heh, you know this episode would make a decent project to help get people used to working with the whole green screen thing. Not to mention reinforce the examples already shown. Oh you crafty devils, you.

Looking forward to the spaceship show. I tried to do some space effects for a movie called Car Wars. It was basically a parody of Star Wars but with toy cars playing the characters. Doing the space scenes was the hardest part. So I am eager to learn any tips that would make it easier.

Green screen + fishing wire and you're pretty set.

09-23-2007, 02:17 PM
Or Green Screen and green string that would work wouyldn't it?
Woo First Post, me just joined love the show want to start using the tips when I start making more movies again.
You could also wrap any object in chroma-key green gaffer tape, or even buy some chroma-key green paint, and key out all sorts of objects.

You could Allso go the Star Wars way and Have your ship sitting on a green table or something to that effect and move your camera around the ship!
wow you guys that was the best episode youve done yet. The space duel was hilarious, having a satirical approach yet being serious about the topic at hand makes these episodes really entertaining. 'Spaceships' deserves an A+, imo.

Thanks Todd!
I read people going back and forth on how to get rid of the strings. I'm telling you the fishing line really doesn't show up. I didn't use any digital effects to hide the strings.

You could always use a solid colored background, and just overlay the front part. Or put yourself in a cockpit-like shadow.

I was actually thinking to myself the other day... the new 'film fights' task is a trailer based around an egg...
I though to myself "Wouldn't it be great to do a sci-fi trailer and have egg boxes flying through space?"

09-25-2007, 04:41 PM
Hey, Erik and gang, what did you all use to make the background and the controls, were fhey 3d or images? Could you show me the way? I'm working on a short called Buck Gordon (buck rogers + flash gordon). BTW, Beck Gordon was a pretty sweet name! ;P
Here is my test- http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZjVbFpc_h4g I will use my Bluescreen next time, the Greenscreen isn't well lit. But I like your cockpit better... what did you use to design the inside?

09-27-2007, 09:04 PM
Erik and others, Couldnt you allso build a small scale model of a cockpit and over lap that on to the green screen?

Omg I totally forgot again!!!! Sorry for the delay and here you go everyone. It's a photoshop doc with a back and front layer. Delete the still image of me and insert your green screen video.
If you use this for a cockpit scene you better post a link in this thread!

Hopefully my link is still up!
Erik Put this up for download a while ago. Its a photoshop file and there are three layers. Background, Erik and control panel. Once you have your chair, shoot in front of a greenscreen and replace the Erik layer with yourself.
http://rapidshare.com/files/109222942/erik_cockpit.psd.html
Also if you reach just out of the top of your frame and pretend to flick switches and push buttons it can be pretty convincing too.
As for the chair, I would do what Dai Mo Gui said.
If it isnt tell me and ill post it again.

Yes, it's back up now. (It wasn't when I posted the previous reply.)
This RapidShare, though, only lets you download it once before they want money. I'm not exactly pleased... but I got it.
Thanks ever so!
Cheers!
