Is Youtube HD now? I see the aspect ratio of the video player has changed and the quality has gone up. Is it HD now? Check out this one for example:

Youtube goes widescreen, I was watching James Rolfe's latest review and I was like, woah, what the f--k?
I don't really like it... Until I saw it with an Indy Mogul video.

I just noticed the wider player myself. I was on about 90 minutes ago and it was the normal size. I came on just now after watching True Blood to see if my new video had processed yet and, boom, wide screen. I thought I messed with a setting somehow.

This is very obviously not even close to HD (either is Vimeo, for that matter). For reference, this (http://www.imageviper.com/displayimage/93486/0/Hotfuzzhddvd8.png) is the size of an HD frame.
Can we please dispense with this bullshit -- YouTube is not HD, Vimeo is not HD. HD is not a marketing term, it is a standard. Look it up!

Vimeo is HD. HD 720p. There's multiple versions of HD. Theres 720, 1080, and up. Also, if you add &fmt=22 at the end of the URL of a video that was uploaded as HD on YouTube, it will play in HD 720p.

Youtube HD is so stupid. The videos on it looked bad before, but now they worse with the new aspect ratio.

HD or not, it means all my old output has to be re-uploaded now if I'm going to offer a decent 'youtube TV' show... should have uploaded in a better format in the first place...
...ho hum... at least it means that the new uploads will have better sound on them (that youtube messed up last time).
I dunno why, but I'm still trying to plonk my head onto the crotch of youtube - just like a dumb, slavering, faithful dog, hoping to be stroked affectionately...

i like it but they are changing everything (even the things that they recently changed) Like they use to show the progress in which the video was uploading, now it doesn't. And like yesterday they had the time of the video on the video and now that's gone.
I really like the upload progress too and if they had that with what they have now it would have been great

It's a good move. However, the basic High Quality seems a little fuzzier in the large format than it did before. Larger size is worth it though. It seems to me YouTube is trying to get more cred.

I hate to be blunt, but who cares? Your videos look better. It doesn't make up for the fact that 99.9% of the members are legally retarded. It's the same videos, just less fuzzy. Nobody likes to watch static-y video, but lets be honest. At this point, it doesn't matter

oh my god. i was watching an hd video on youtube and my mouth dropped. I feel like crying. I thought this day was never going to come. sniff sniff.
Yea but anyways does this mean the SD videos are going to look better because my camera isn't hd. I should probably shoot something and test it out.

It depends on what they've done to increase quality. If it's an across the board bitrate increase, then yes, all videos are going to see an increase in quality.
If it's JUST for HD videos then SD videos probably won't, UNLESS you upres them and upload them to trick the system.

How do you upres them?

You can generally choose what resolution to output your video to. Instead of outputting SD 480, output 720.

It annoys me to watch SD videos now, though, even if they are good quality. Especially if they're letterboxed. You have all this unfilled black frame and it looks bad.

You mean when the black bars are on the left and right? Technically that's pillar boxing.

Now if we can only get rid of that damn 10 minute limit.

Well I learned something today. But yeah, I hate seeing a huge potential video frame, and watching a video that only fills up half the space.

Same, that's why I hate that not all of my TV channels are in HD. I despise watching the 4:3 SDTV on my HDTV.

so if I upres my footage it won't be true hd but will it still look better than sd? I'm exporting some test footage right now.

From what i've been able to find, they have a lower bitrate for SD videos, than HD.
So to take advantage of the increased bitrate, it might be beneficial to output to an HD resolution. I've seen people output SD videos to HD on Vimeo, and the improvement is actually pretty significant.

If you don't have an HD camera could you still have the watch in HD option? because i hear that it's not really HD and i want to know
And i changed my dimensions to the 640 by 360 and there is still a little of the letter box and it's really blurry unless you click the HQ option any suggestions?

you just have to render your video 720p and then its hd simple as that

Yes, you can still watch it in HD if you output it to an HD resolution, BUT it won't be "true" HD.
BUT with a good upressing program (thus uses internal algorithms to blow it up with more internal detail) you can squeeze quite a lot of detail out of an SD image.

This is Instant HD, i'm not suggesting this is the program you'll want to buy, (lots of cheaper programs can do similar stuff), but look at some of the examples they have and you can see the difference.
