I just want to make a simple little animation that probably 10 seconds long.
1) It's a series of images that create the illusion of movement.
2) A lot of examples from that first video were taken from a book by Preston Blair, which is a whole book-length tutorial on how to animate.
So there's two choices for tutorials, the short one and the long one.

Animation is a series of drawings played in succession to create movement.

Want to learn Animation? Read John K's blog, he has done hundreds of posts about animation essentials and is a great place to start.
If you want to do animation, you study art, and as rrh said, DEFINITELY DEFINITELY STUDY PRESTON BLAIR.

They have the ESSENTIAL Advanced Animation by Preston Blair for free up on this site, READ IT, CONSUME IT, LIVE BY IT.
Also, start TODAY, start digging up copies of classic disney films, early stuff especially, and old Fleischer cartoons and WB cartoons, and WATCH THEM FRAME BY FRAME, see how the image changes to create the illusion of movement.
Oh, and this is something I saw lately and loved:

Wes already linked to John K, who is educational, but also a curmudgeon and a perfectionist. I can't afford to be a perfectionist if I want to finish my stuff in a reasonable time.
I was posting a little about animation and John K's influence on that, here:

Oh yeah, and there's sometimes neat stuff on Joe Murray's blog:
