View Full Version : What if we had...an INDY MOGUL FILM FESTIVAL?

So, after writing this about Sundance (http://thebobbymiller.com/post/63370124/sundance), I couldn't help but think:
What if Indy Mogul had a film festival?
While I'm not sure how feasible this is and I really have no say in the matter, I think it would be cool. Hear me out.
One night only.
In NYC.
* You arrive at a venue and get to see 5-10 of the Best Short Films in the World.
* Then, the filmmakers get on stage and talk about their shorts with the audience.
* Then, everyone stands up and stretches and stuff.
* Then, we show a feature film.
* Then, those filmmakers get up on stage and talk about it.
* Then, we all hold hands and sing songs.
The problem is: how do we pay for it? While we can charge admission, I'm sure, we should have some money to actually put up the show.
I wouldn't want to charge submission fees. Most film festivals charge anywhere from $15-50.
I was thinking what if we only charged a fee if you got in? That means you wouldn't be blowing money on nothing.
I also think that the whole festival should be conducted online. IE. People submit their films through a vimeo group or something. At the end of the festival we could say, "If you want to see every film submitted to the festival check out our website. We might have made a mistake and overlooked a great film there."
Anyways. I'm really excited about this. I think it should happen in the summer during our "off season".
Or late May or Early June or something.
Maybe we can have Steve Nelson do music before hand? Oh and me and Erik would host or something?
Man, seriously, I wanna do this!

I think it's a fantastic idea. Its a rewarding feeling to be admitted into a film festival and it would add a whole other dynamic in indy mogul in general. it would be a kind of bummed to none-NY fans, but i can't imagine a better reward to die hard indy-mogulers then to be admitted to a 'real physical' film festival.
id submit :)

I like it. But I don't think you'd want to host with Erik after what happened back with that girl you didn't call back. But it'd be pretty cool for the Indy Mogul film festival.

That's a great idea. The only problem would be if someone's video was accepted but they couldn't get to NYC. Maybe a live webcam?

Putting aside all the "Erik hates Bobby" crap I think this is an excellent idea. I have one small change though. Instead of choosing from "Best Short Films", people send in there short films to the website where they are judged. That way, everyone has a chance. If you need help organizing it, I'd love to lend a hand.

I think it's a good idea. But I think you should only charge like, $15 because all the mogulers are spread about and if we want to go it would be like, $100 - $350 to get a ticket to NYC.

Honestly, I would drive the four hours from philly to new york if you guys did this. I would prefer it to be in June, because my hour long movie should be done by then. When do you think the submission deadline would be?

I know I would go. It's maybe a four/five hour drive from here to the NNN offices.
You could also do a live broadcast for those who can't be there.

Triple posting!? Interesting.
Multiple rooms with different genres and one winning feature film?
Or one large room with non-stop showcasing?

If I submit a film and it got picked I would buy a plane ticket to NY to attend this.
I so far have not met anybody who's interested in filmmaking here where I live (even tho Austin is just an hour away), so networking like that would be worth the price.
If an indymogul film festival goes down well, hopefully there will be a second and third one.
That's getting ahead, but anyways great idea and I'm sure you have the support from every indy mogul member.
Apocalypse WOW!
12-08-2008, 02:59 PM
Yeah this seems like a great idea. Why not just have it in next new networks building? why would it only have to be one night? I would pay to go.

I'm definitely interested in this. I live in NJ, so it's a real quick trip into the city for me. You could always setup a paypal account to accept donations to fund this. You can even get some local business' to sponsor. Maybe even some nationwide business' would sponsor if you do a live cam feed. No entry fee make film makers happy, just ask Tromadance. Even if you're forced to add an entry fee, you could probably make it really low, like in the $5 range. Volunteers also make up the backbone of alot of festivals. Im sure there are many willing to help. Since I'm so close, I may be able to lend a hand if needed. Reach out to local film groups and such. Lets get this off the ground and run with it.

Here's another thought. If this eventually come to fruition, somebody should definitely film the whole process from beginning to end. Call it "The Birth of a Festival" and make it a documentary.

Guys, keep your thoughts rolling in. There's a lot of great stuff you guys are suggesting.
Papa Bear Erik is digging on the idea so that is a good sign. I don't want to speak too, but I hope this works out. We shall see!

Bobby, i have 2 ideas,
1.) Make a short film, but one that you wont upload, and sell it, and use the money as donations
2.) Take clips from past episodes, and outtakes, and bloopers, and sell that on a dvd
Just throwin tht out there...
Oh ya, you could do it in the NNN office, but that might give away all of your identities

This would be the best ever to happen indy mogul if the guys did this
people could submit shorts and attend (I live in CT so if this ever happens im going!)
People in the audiance could vote for the best film in different types of films like Horror, Comedy, etc Then could have smaller awards for Best editing, Best actor, etc
This would be so amazing if this happened
And like other people said you could have a paypal donate button or whatever I bet a lot of people would donate.

We could all bring cameras, get footage, then someone could edit it all into onle big film. That would be awesome.

But we are talking about indy film makers and mouglers. and as one, I don't have a budget that would allow me to travel to NYC or anywhere alse for that matter. So I don't know about most of you.
But we are an online community.
So why can't the festival be online?
as simple as a Forum thread. The main sticky would have links to everyone who want's to participate website.
Then a sticky of The best ten submissions from those sites.(choosen and voted on by mouglers)
Then we all pick a day and do a Q&E live like thing were submission winners could either call in, show up at NNN studios, or chat live with the group.
Then Live stream a feature film and repeat the live chat part.
Just my two cents

That would be like the coolest thing ever! You could have like a live show on the internet so that mogulers from different countries (like me) could watch it online (aswell as it being in NYC).
I would donate and I would tell all my friends about it! Maybe you could try and get 2 extra cams and ask a local business to sponsor.
The Steve live music thing sounds great! Erik and Bobby for hosting it sounds gr8!
If it happens I will be so happy!

I like the Idea about having different genre catagories, but I also think that there should also be catagories for different age groups of the film makers such as over 18's and under 18's and possibly different catagories for buget ranges.
Just a thought.

I think having an Under 18 or "teenage filmmaker" category is absolutely essential to this film festival.

Hey dudes and dudettes!
Thanks for all the feedback on here. I'm gonna take a step back from this right now because I've been swamped with tons of stuff. If you don't know, I'm actually still in film school and trying to do the show every week (which is a full time job in itself) and complete a feature film script (and make a short film) amongst the other side jobs I do to pay the bills, is getting to be a little intense. So, much so that if I don't learn to cut back now, I'm gonna burn out and it's gonna be really messy.
SOOOOO, if you want this festival to happen, keep commenting here or just go to indymogul.com's main page and use the contact info there and contact the office folk about it. As of now, I think I'm gonna take a break from this stuff, so that I can retain any bit of sanity I have left!
Basically, I have no say in the matter on this festival, so if you want to see this happen, contact the office peeps! Remember: I don't get out much!
I love you all!
