Buy Premiere Elements and After Effects.
Because AE alone would be pointless because it can't edit.

I'd have to go After Effects. While I've never used Wax, AE is ultra-intuitive, especially is you're familiar with Photoshop. Plus you can get a good deal with student pricing.

It depends on your budget. If money is a big issue, you could start with a cheap editor like Vegas. But I wouldn't really recommend WAX to the beginner because it has lots of glitches, which can be very distracting. You want an editor that won't give you an error message every few minutes, even if it's Windows Movie Maker.

Vegas doesnt come into it... Wax and AE are compositing softwares.

You're right about AE - but WAX certainly is an editor, glitchy as it may be. I was responding to the guy who mentioned Premiere and AE. But add them together and it's a big price tag; which is why it may not be best for a beginner.

Vegas can be used for basic compositing, all though that's not its primary function.

Wax is a high performance and flexible video compositing and special effects software. The idea for Wax is to be very general purpose and flexible in video compositing and effects, so that you can compose your dream video sequence with ease everytime.

But Ive never used it so I'll trust you.

I swear by AE.
Even if you're a beginner, after a few days (maxing out) you'll be creating effects like there's no tomorrow! :)

And by maxing out I assume you mean waking up from a haze and realizing you haven't eaten anything but a bagel and haven't slept in the past 22 hours? I've been there...
