OK i don't know if I'm being stupid or what.
but is there any version of AE or vegas that i can buy that will allow me to edit raw AVI footage or will i have to go through the entire converting process every time i want to add a clip in?

I'm pretty sure that both Vegas AND AE can edit .avi

Any software should be able to edit raw .AVI footage.

well in AE it says "no such AVI compressor" whenever i try to import and Vegas says it does not recognize the file type but when i look at the properties of the clip it says .avi

.AVI is not the problematic part, but the compressor that was used on it. I'm going to take a wild guess say and your importing footage from your camera rather than capturing it?

that would be an accurate guess

What are you recording onto...sometimes dvds, or sd cards use weird codecs. If you got a cd with your camera check if there is a software on it for converting the files.
I've also heard some things about HD footage being wierd like this... but WesScog seems to know way more about that than I do.

Download and Install the xvid codec and you should be able to use the video.

Xvid is also a great codec to export stuff in. It keeps it in really high quality.
