So, who is excited for this one!
I honestly can't decide if I'm excited or worried. Heh.
Am I the only one that thinks Zachary Quinto looks like he's playing Spock in some parody?

There's definitely some weird casting going on for this movie.

I'm not sure about this'un. I've never been the biggest fan of Star Trek, and the only thing I like by J.J Abrams was Fringe, and that got bad fast.

It was an amazing movie. Absolutely gorgeous. I loved the way that wide ass anamorphic lens caught all the flares in the bridge, and most everything else was beautiful. Hats off to Daniel Mindel.
As someone who's never seen an episode of the series, or any of the movies, I obviously can't comment on how faithful it was to the original characters. But I felt it was extremely accessible, and they explained a lot about the Star Trek universe pretty eloquently. There were some silly parts, like when young Kirk almost kills himself driving off of a cliff for no apparent reason, but they were sure as hell fun.
Nearly every performance was great, even some of the strangely cast ones, like simon pegg worked well. Characters like Spock were fascinating to me, since I've never been introduced to them before.
Oh, and Chris Pine is realy hot.

NAF, Kirk didn't drive the car off the cliff for no reason. His uncle was clearly an asshole and possibly abusive.

The reason the car was driven off the edge was to show how little Kirk cared. All part of his fearless charm.
I loved the movie. I've never really watched Star Trek at all before, as I am a huge Star Wars nerd. However, from a fan of science fiction and filmmaking in general, I thought it was a superb movie that, as one critic pointed out, is the "Batman Begins" of Star Trek. That's the way I see it. The original crew is getting older, preventing them from making new episodes. So, why not take them back to their youth, and show how exactly they become the fabled crew of the Enterprise.
I think this movie also pointed out how important casting is in a movie. Never under look the actors. No matter how good the cinematography, writing, or directing, movies are about the actors and how they portray characters.

I always hated anything startreck but this movie blew me away! Its not going on my all time favorite movie list but it was the first movie that made me aplaued at the end. Second movie were the entire crowd aplaued at the end as well.

Thats movies for you. The Crtics are ass holes, the fanboys are retarded who expect the movie adaption to the Cartoon they watch as kid to be exactly the same and every shape and form and the award shows sometimes make you wounder. How the fuck did they get nominated? For example MTV movie awards.

Star Trek pretty much blew my mind balls away.
I didn't understand why Tyler Perry was in there though. I thought to myself while watching the movie, "Why the fuck is Madea on this council?" He wasn't bad but it was the weirdest casting I have seen in a while.

That will prove to the G.I joe fan boys to not get pissey over the cast. Simon Peg and that guy from Harold and kumar are the least two actors i expected to be in a movie like this.

No, the second I saw Simon Pegg I was like "OMG THAT's who I would have casted!"
I was more stunned by 'Roldy being in the movie. I mean, First Kal Penn goes on to a serious role on house and is now working for Oboma..but this just like blows my mind.

Apparently he's a big Trekkie, so they gave the cameo to him because he always wanted to be in a Star Trek movie.

Also, as I guess one of the few people here that was really into Star Trek when I was younger (Watched the original in syndication, my Father loved it when he was a kid, and I was really into The Next Generation when it first came out, seen all the movies at least 3 times, etc.) it was never really ever a "Star Wars" or "Star Trek" thing for me, I was always just really into anything involving space.
So coming from a "moderate" Trekkie (I never went to conventions, never dressed up as the characters other than on Halloween.) someone who always enjoyed it and have watched a lot of it, I loved this movie.
Like I don't get why some of the really hardcore fans don't like it, it was great Sci-Fi, and we haven't had a really good Sci-Fi movie in a while.

Nitpicky nerd alert... but Star Trek came WAAAAY before Star Wars (concepted almost 20 years before Star Wars was even released), AND Lucas was just doing more or less a direct adaptation of Campbell's Hero Cycle.
So it's not like Star Wars pioneered something that hadn't ever been done before.

You know... I always wondered why there is this big feud between lovers of Star Trek and Star Wars. I love both franchises.
Each has their own unique story that make them fun and compelling.
It's like arguing what the best part of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich is.

Star Wars didn't pioneer anything but one of the biggest cult following in history. That's the sad beauty of it. Lucas stuck gold. Star Trek is popular...but does not span the wide spectrum that Star Wars has in video games, table top RPG's, expanded universe novels, new jedi order, ect. It hit pop culture more directly as well. Even my mom knows what a LightSaber is. (And she only watches desperate housewives, and like those retarded shows, and she lives in a cave) She wouldn't know what "set phasers to stun" meant.
Hate to admit it, because Lucas is a retard who can't write for shit, but the dude was smart and took a concept and ran with it. The sad part is that the fans know more/respect the source material more than he does.
It's the same thing as Yankee Fans vs. Mets Fans. Same city, both play the same game...but it's fun to pit them against each other just..because.
If anything, I guess what I'm saying is SW is more mainstreamed than Treck. Treck's famous lines are all corny, but awesome. (Live Long And Propser, ect)
...It's just not the same as:
"Leigh: Han, I love you."
"Han: Yea, I know."
Don't mean to spark the nerd battle Wes, I do agree that Treck's concept came first :)...just think it's irrelevant since they both pull from the Hero Cycle.

When I finished watching the Trek film I wanted to walk across the hall and watch the sequel immediately. Yea, it was that good. J.J. hit a home run with this film and I'm sure we have more adventures ahead of us in this altered time line version of Star Trek!

Okay let me start off by saying it was a good movie.
Pleanty of action, excellent characters, loved all the little jokes through out regrading old epsoides and mythos.
Kirk hitting his head in the shuttle : Enterprise wink
The guy in the red Parchute bitting it. saw that coming a mile off.
Simion Peg was halarious.
Karl Urban looks a damn lot like Deforest Kelly.
Harlod and Kumar both were on the set. One was Sulu
But I swear I saw the other one in the background on the bridge.
But (and this might get me flamed) I didn't care for the excessive use of "handheld work" and lens flare.
The camera was constantly moving even during simple dialouges. and whenever they were on the enterprise everything was causing lens flare.
This last bit not sure if I liked or disliked. the use of industrial buildings as the more mechincal sections of the ship. Engieneering looked like it was in a brewery, but it was a nice nod to Original series.
That said. I also feel this movie took every thing Star Trek that came before it and tosssed it out the window. 40+ yrs of ST gone and we have to start anew. So as a old long time fan, I'm a little dissapointed but am willing(and some what eager) to see what comes next.

I hate excessive handheld. I'll say it right now, F*** clover field, f*** The second two 'Bourne movies.
Handheld is great when used in say, The Wrestler. It wasn't obnoxious, it helped us naturally follow this very real character throughout the events of his life.
However, the handheld that was used for Treck FIT. It was great, and It never had me shaking my head at any point or scowling. Hence why I say JJ has new respect from me.
Sci Fi = Lens flares. Classic.
