I'm starting to really get into metal. Good metal, too. And all kinds of metal. But my mp3 player has a lot of unused space, you see, and that space could potentially be filled with ass-kicking songs that I have yet to discover.
The heaviest song I've listened to so far (and enjoyed) is Conquer All by Behemoth.

Heaviest I ever heard has to be something from Satyricon. Best I ever heard that's not finnish has to be anything by Stuart Townsend. All the good stuff.

I'm going to take this one seriously for now (blasphemy!), and give a few bands - before we went all single-mad, we used to listen by band or by album - that I think fit the bill:
Cryptopsy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iLmF_2q7KA&feature=related) (stick with the Lord Worm albums - Blasphemy Made Flesh, None So Vile and Once Was Not)
Suffocation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2n9g3iqFbA)
Wormed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DstxaAZ4m50) (pretentious as hell, but I like it)
Entombed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jY6sqiA8gj0)
Carcass (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_yDg6kGb-U&feature=related)
Vader (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Y0734-yNTI&feature=channel)
And because I've got to plug some Australian metal (I've seen the first two live - they're awesome):
Fuck... I'm Dead (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9nJ7siHHfpQ)
The Day Everything Became Nothing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G09LPLHVEJM&feature=related)
The Bezerker (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gqVVQ-q8Zs&feature=related) (I'm embarassed that I like these guys -- I heard they've gone industrial recently)
I don't listen to much black metal. Maybe someone else can help you there.

Death Metal - Nile is some pretty heavy stuff. Deicide is good.
Black metal - soooooo varied. depends if you want raw black metal or symphonic black metal. Dimmu Borgir are good for the symphonic stuff. If your after the raw stuff check out Dark Funeral.
If your in a really heavy mood and arent particularly looking for death/black then check out 'Suicide Note part 2' by Pantera (thats one angry song :D)

Dimmu Borgir...good
Those two things don't fit in same sentence.
symphonic black metal
I don't believe that there is such thing.

Anything by Ray Charles, Or Rush.
What are you talking about!..... Rush is R'n'B! ;)
Anteus - Cyklik Torture (for black metal). Chosen for shrill cacophonic speed and intensity to rep the norse (even though theyre french).
Nile - Annihilation of the Wicked (low bass, resounding vocals, intense percussion). The behemoth suggestions almost leaned me that way. I could easily throw some kataklysm, deranged, or suffocation on this slot too. Nile is getting my death metal vote.
Testament - Down For Life. This is my fav clean vocal style 90s thrash track.
Sepultura - To The Wall. Sheer speed, shredding, intensity, and its old school as hell. Representing classic 80s thrash.

Some good stuff so far. I'm not really into pure death/black metal. I can barely tolerate bands like Gorgoroth or Cannibal Corpse. I know it's an aquired taste though. For now, it's gotta have melody for me. I don't care about vocals too much, any kind of screaming or growling works. It's just the melody of the song that I care about. Melodic black/death stuff is very good.
And I love Dimmu Borgir. Todd, I like the Sepultura song.

Destrophy, Dog Fashion Disco, and Facecage are a few good bands.
I say it time and time again, Sepultura's Schizophrenia is the most brutally heavy thrash album ever made.
And as per the melodic thing, you cant really be on the fringe edge of extremely heavy and melodic at the same time. Brutality (no, not the band) requires amelodic/disharmonious composition.
Some Napalm Death gets really damn heavy and stays totally melodic. Also some Bolt Thrower, Emperor, Testament, Sacred Reich, At The Gates, and Dissection can be very melodic and hard hitting. If you count power slides as melodic (I dont) then toss Dying Fetus on there.

Nile's song Annhilation Of The Wicked is completely insane.
I know there's alot of stuff heavier then this, but a song i really like is Bonded By Blood by Exodus.

I once listened to such an intense song my ears exploded. So nice.
i take it everyone in this thread has heard the new Meshuggah album?

I dare you to find a more brutal track than this that doesn't rely on the speed of percussion.
