View Full Version : HV30-Shutter Speed
I just got my brand new Canon Hv30 a few days ago and am playing around with it and i wanted to know if you could change the shutter speed to get a nice slow motion effect. Is this possible? If so, How?

The shutter speed will not slow your footage down, only reduce or increase motion blur.
You'd have to change the frame rate, which I do not believe you can do with the HV30.

It is digital camcorder, it doesn't have a shutter. To get slow motion you need to speed up the frame rate, which unfortunately can't be done on consumer camcorders. You'll just have to do it in post.
Oh my bad i meant frame rate...
But thanks anyway

I'm pretty sure you can set the shutter speed to be really high, and then slow it down. It's supposedly looks better than just slowing down 'normal' footage. But don't quote me on it, I'm not positive.

Indeed. I don't know if the HV30 has a 30p or 60i option, but if you're using a faster framerate for slow motion, you should always use a faster shutter speed.

Yeah, you can't do that on your camcorder, the shutter speed only affects the rate at which the shutter blinks, the faster it is, the less motion blur you get, but then the image also comes out darker.
If you want to make it slow motion, just pop it in your windows movie maker and drag the slow mo effect on it.

You can get pretty amazing slow-motion results from it using computational slow-motion processing.

A fast-shutter will give better results when slowing down footage using Twixtor or some similar program.
And while these cameras don't have practical shutters, many have settings to achieve the same effect.
I have a problem with my hv30 when i try to import footage into FCE it say the HDV video deck detected and check if it plugged in. It is plugged in and everything. I used a firewire connection if that helps.
BTW
I've been adding alot of threads on my Hv30 and did't want to make more clutter so i added it to another thread of mine about my HV30. If this is wrong im sorry.

In Vegas, you go to "Import from device", then select "HDV". Then you rewind your camera until the place where you want to start importing from. Then press "Record" (on Vegas, not on the camera). Then you press "Stop" and it will automatically put it into your project.
I have imported before on my other camera so i know how. If I put my tape on my older camera would it still import in HD?

I'm afraid I have absolutely no clue about that... Can you post a screenshot of what happens when you plug in the HV30?
Here's a screenshot

Set it to shutter Priority mode to set the shutter speed. Sorry you can on change the frame rate from 30 FPS to 24P

That's funny. Then how is it possible to change the speed of a non-existant shutter?

I did something similar with After Effects:

This was shot at 1080 60i with a Panasonic HDC-SD1. After Effects Pixel Blending mode smoothed out the slow motion.

you shoot your scene in 60i then in post you slow it down half which would slow it down to 30fps. you shouldnt get a less quality picture but a slow motion hd shot. you can adjust your shutter speed and exposure with the hv20-40 but it really only affects the picture and light. good luck and enjoy the camera.
P.s for all those people that think you need a $2,000 + camera you are wrong. i get the same results from my $700 hv30

Yes they do. They just have a sensor behind them instead of film.
And to change the Shutter go to "Shutter Priority Mode" and set your wanted speed.
I just noticed I posted here twice... well, Thats what happens when you bring up 11 month old threads.
