I am looking at buying a shotgun mic for my DVX.
I want to spend $400 - $450 on the mic, then another $50 or so on a nice 25' XLR cord.
What would you recommend?
I am liking this one:

Right now I'm using a Azden SMG X microphone which i love. Azden makes a XLR version called the SMG 1X. I just did my first gig (wedding) and the mic worked out great. I got some interviews with family members and with my audio bars maxed out from everyone talking i could still hear my subject fine. It's not super directional but it's still a great mic. Also the mic you found looks good.

Depends on where are you going to be using it; the K6 system is great because you can buy additional heads. I tend to use a me64 indoors instead the me66 can get echo-y inside. Others swear by the me67 indoors but the me67 is LOOOOOONG and I have a hard time getting it out of frame.

for the xlr cable if you want high quality look out for mogami or canary cable, and neutrik connectors.
you can get a 50ft one off ebay for about 50 dollars.
or, if you have a soldering iron. make your own cables :)

yeah that's the thing, i want to be able to get good sound indoors and out. The length of the me67 scares me though.

Dunno if you can do it for 400 bucks, but pick up and Oktava mk12 for indoors (with the hyper capsule) and and audio technica at8035 or similar for outdoors.

how does the At8035 do indoors?
Why don't you see if a local retailer is willing to let you try the mic out before you buy. Or rent one for an hour. It's always nice to do actual field tests for mics before buying and it's the only real way you can get a handle on their sound.

The first thing anyone noticed about him was his eyes. Shackleton's eyes were a cold, unfeeling grey, with dark trenches of fatigue running under them. His alert expression was pale, dirty and poorly shaven. Every one of his short bristly hairs stood at attention from his scalp. A few years ago they were a thick black, but now they were mostly varying shades of grey. His pants and cloak were a dirty grey/blue, and all of it was extremely baggy, as he was gaunt and short of stature. Under the cloak was a thick black flak jacket. He wore no shoes yet his feet were as fair and smooth as those of a baby.

He introduced himself with a gravely voice and shook my hand, causing the hair on my arm to stand on end as though statically charged. There was a strange sort of resistance I felt against his hand, as though I wasn't touching it at all. Being a bit of a wizard myself, I probed him for any sort of spells or enchantments as I shook his hand. For a brief moment I felt them. Twenty or more enchantments: impact shielding, projectile shielding, sound dampening, radio and telepathic jamming, and some things I couldn't begin to recognize. When I released his hand the fortress disappeared as the probe I had used was blocked by some other nameless enchantment. He looked down at the small crater he had created in the street from his fall, then up at the building he had jumped from; it billowed black smoke from a hole smote in its side. "I'm going to have to find a new apartment" he said stoically.

There aren't any places near me that have any type of professional camera rentals. I would have to travel a few hours in order to rent any of the mics i am looking at.
I wish i could do that. I would go to guitar center, but they don't have really any choice of shotguns.

how does the At8035 do indoors?
The 8035 is actually surprising good indoors even though it is a very long shotgun. I highly recommend it, I like the sound of it a lot.
