Im sorry if there is another thread similar to this, i checked and couldnt find anything.
Today in my AP European History class, we talked about Napoleon Bonaparte. After listening to the lecture, i was intrigued by this small little man. Considering a man of 5'2 could make men nervous or even sound more intelligent to men twice his age. But what interested me the most was that he had a photographic memory. During school back in Corsica (i think), he recieved average grades. But as he was forced to go to France because of trouble back where they were, he was put into a military school where he made straight A's and could really put his power to the limit.
Is anyone else here a fan of Napoleon?

He's definitely interesting, but my favorite historical figure is still Mad Anthony Wayne.
The guy took over Stony Point in 30 minutes, using only bayonets.

there has been some debate regarding Napoleon's stature over the years. Dependant upon the units of measure used at the time. The British inch vs the pre-decimalized French pouce. It is argued that Napoleon was listed as 5'2p meaning 5 pied du roi, 2 pouce. When converted to Imperial measurements, he was actually 5 foot 6 inches tall. This was an average height for the time. Now, I'm not claiming to KNOW how tall Napoleon was or what the relevance his stature has on his skill as a tactition on the battlefield.
What IS evident is that the British propaganda machine portrayed Napoleon as an angry little man. This propaganda was thoroughly effective as can be seen by it's survival beyond the years of this man.
I'm reminded of the propaganda faux pas made by the Axis Powers in WWII. Englishmen were portrayed to the German populace as fops and dandies. The Germans went into battle expecting to fight a nation of pansies. Likewise, they portrayed Americans as vapid playboys with no fight in them. The Germans didn't have the "awakened sleeping giant" view of the US like the Japanese did.
Conversely, the US and British propaganda machine portrayed the Germans and Japanese as downright savage in every way(the germans in a montrous way, the Japanese in a stupid primate sort of way). Allied soldiers entered battle perceiving their opponents as demons and monsters (figuratively) Who wound up with the rude awakening on the field?

er, that was average height back then, he really wasn't short compared to the rest of his country
he was called "le petit corporal" because he spent more time with the lower ranks of the military than the majors and generals, which was part of his populist appeal
I think he was actually slightly taller than average for his time

Depending on who's Pied du Roi ...
Pied du Roi 324.8 or 322.9 or 325.8 mm
Pouce 27.072mm or 25.2mm
That's 5 foot 5 1/2 inches to 5 foot 6 1/4 inches
Anyone wonder why they went metric?
The low end of average for the time, but not really short.
I'm vaguely related to him on my mother's side via marriage.
His problem, like most rulers, is that he tended to give leadership positions to those who did the most for him, rather than upon ability. He was a great leader, but only a good general; his megalomania was what got him in the end.
Now Subotai was a great general. Mongols promoted according to ability, except for the ruling family, which was ultimately a mistake. If subotai had succeeded Ghengis, then I believe all of Asia and Europe would have fallen.
