I would love to see an effect where they have a person put their head in the guillotine, the blade drops, and the head falls into the basket, with blood everywhere. And then their head is in the basket, but talking, so it's still alive.

EDIT: On second thought, I probably wouldn't. I can already think of ways to do this, using existing Indy Mogul ideas, like the fake head for when it actually gets cut off, or a green screen for when it's talking, etc. So I guess I need to keep thinking about what I want to request for Mogulween. :D

You could always use the split screen cloning effect. Shoot the guillotine from the side with your actor in it. After you actor looks toward the camera so you can see his face, have him look down and drop the blade. Obviously rig it so the "blade" never actually makes it near the actors neck. Either screw some wood blocks in the blades track to stop it, or tie a big knot in the rope so it cant make it all the way through the pully. After you have this shot, replace your actor with a fake head, still having it face down so you can no longer see the face. This time, remove the blocks or knot that you used before and allow the blade to completely follow through knocking the head to the floor. Edit the two shots together as you would if you were trying to clone an actor, but dont use the split screen until just before the blade stops in the first shot. If done correctly, the actor should appear to have lost his head right after looking down.

Make the blade out of stretched fabric, layer it with black and silver spray paint, then splash blood around the "cut" zone.

When it hits your target the fabric will bend and go around their neck, but looks like it went all the way through, the important part is adding in a big "THWAP" sound effect, like a meat cleaver.

THEN, go to a shot of a dummy body and a fake head, and the fake head falling off and into a basket.

But you just need four tall pieces of wood, and one shot piece of wood, and another short piece of wood, then the fabric, and a thick piece of wood with a hole in it.

I can draw a diagram for you tomorrow.

Okay
so I'm working on this Alice Cooper-type thing for a stage show Im working on
And you know how one of his famous bits was that he had a guillotine that would chop his head off?
How do I accomplish that-- do I just use the fake heads tutorial or should I use something else?

well first you have to make a guillotine. do you already have this covered or do you need stuff for that?

Well you'd need a lot of wood to make a full sized one.

But it's basic wood construction, you'll most likely need a carpenter.

But for the "blade" stretch a piece of thin fabric between them, like a sheet of spandex or lycra.

But paint it lightly with silver and black acrylic paint.

When it hits the target, the fabric will bend around it, it'll go so fast it'll look like it slide into the subject.

You could have a dummy with a fake head already detached, and just jerk the head off with some fishing wire, and turn on a blood spray in the neck at the same time.

But make a fabric blade, so you don't have to deal with a giant, heavy, dangerous, metal prop.

As far as I can tell from Alice Cooper videos, he has some sort of quick-release mechanism which would allow him to drop through the bottom of the guillotine (that is, the bottom board would fall straight down and Alice would travel with it). Obviously you cannot use a dummy if you wish to show the person being led to the guillotine and decapitated (in a film, obviously, you have the added benefit of cutting - a stage show, however, is more complex).

Just a word - don't use such ambiguous thread titles in future. The more exact the title, the more we'll be inclined to help.
Anyway, what exactly do you mean as a 'guillotine' effect? The lads already have a decapitation video, and all you'd need to do is simply copy the effect and lie down. You wouldn't even need that - careful cutting / editing are all that's needed. If you're talking about a 'live' effect, intended for a direct observing audience, then decapitation has been done plenty of times by stage magicians. Google it and you'll find some practical examples.

Here's a link to a site called Haunt project. It's mostly for Halloween, but has some great props in there to! http://www.hauntproject.com/projdetail.asp?category=Guillotines (http://www.hauntproject.com/projdetail.asp?category=Guillotines)
but there was already a thread posted on this. Try searching next time, okay?
