ok, this video was done by a buddy of mine that I graduated film school with.
He is the talented Steven C. Miller and his soon to be released on DVD 30 grand Zombie independent feature film "Automaton Transfusion" was recently purchased by Dimension films/The Weinstein Company. I've seen it and it kicks ass. It was also shot on a DVX100a and it looks amazing...however, this is not the flick I'm going to post.
the flick I'm going to post is something he did with a mutual friend.
YouTube - Sidekick Showdown (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&ct=res&cd=5&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3De5f tC5wyLvU&ei=vqL4RvPCAabQetfHzPQO&usg=AFQjCNEjnyvhxCJRoedcUkgEgn0g3nmafw&sig2=kjAcevc84nUNcPoLOfws-w)
shot all on a CAMERA PHONE!

this is pretty amazing ... just goes to show you don't need a crazy expensive camera .. just talent ..

Exactly, he did an excellent job.
Once again, superior narrative, and excellent editing, makes "bad video" look quite amazing.

Wow, amazing, what camra phone did he use? cause i know theres some camra phones you wont get that quality out of no matter what =X

i believe it was just his sidekick camera phone.
the point of the matter is, that you can make even the shittiest quality picture into something if you just invest in the time. lighting helps, sound helps tremendously, and color correction in post production can do wonders for your low quality picture.

p.s. check out the trailer for his film Automaton Transfusion on either youtube or myspace. it's awesome. and if and when you decide to buy or rent the flick, you won't believe that it was only 30,000 budget.

I'm bumping this post up because people really need to see that your "shitty camera" doesn't have to hold you back.

ok so it was shot on a camera phone. what was it color corrected in, edited in/on, and what video card do they have?
all of those things can matter much more then what you record on.

well, he's partial to final cut pro, so I'd assume it was edited on final cut. I'm not sure about his video card and I'll have to ask what it was color corrected in.
all of those things can matter much more then what you record on.
the whole point of this post was for people to stop crying about their "shitty cameras" when it's possible to make amazing looking footage out of garbage quality video in post production.
maybe you're video looks bad because you don't know how to edit or can't color correct. in which case my only suggestion is to practice on that stuff and not worry about your camera.
and another point of this post was to raise awareness of an indy feature that is raising eyebrows everywhere it goes.
but mostly about the low quality video looking awesome.

That looks really amazing, 30,000 dollars?
Other than the cheap intro animation, and the kind of arrogant, "THIS HORROR MOVIE WILL DEFINE OUR GENERATION" thing, it looks amazing.
I won't knock him, it could turn out to be the Citizen Kane of horror movies, guess well see.
edwardlavender
09-26-2007, 04:31 AM
Yeah everyone thinks that the whole "this movie will define" line is arrogant, but they definitely have the balls to say that line with this movie. It's great, and for 30,000 dollars, they definitely have some legitimacy to it. The movie comes off amazing with its micro budget. And with the recent rash, and I do mean rash, of horrible horror movies that have come out in the last 7 years, this movie definitely picks up the slack.
It definitely is a punch you in the throat thrill ride as its tag line suggests haha.

I just don't like when movies say, "THIS GENERATIONS GODFATHER!" or, "THIS GENERATIONS CITIZEN KANE!" or whatever. When they have the audacity to label themselves like that, it's rarely true.
edwardlavender
09-26-2007, 10:22 PM
true, no film compares to The Godfather...
but sometimes it's a marketing tool and people see it because it's apparently "this generations definitive film"
if you like zombie films you'll love this, and if you like horror or action films you'll like this. and if your into indy films with low budgets that don't look like they have low budgets then this is the flick for you.
but then again, what does this generation have to show for itself horror wise. a bunch of shitty remakes.

shitty remakes?
(I AM NOT SAYING THESE MOVIES ARE GOOD)
are these remakes? some might be and i dont know it but i dont think most of them are re makes
saw 1-4
hostel
captivity
bug
1408
vacancy
disturbia
penny dreadful
dark ride
the ring
all "8 films to die for"
slither
the fog
cry wolf
calcaire
the devils rejects
edwardlavender

saw 1-4...yeah these were good, except we haven't seen 4 yet so who knows where that's gonna go.
hostel...i like eli roth but I wouldn't say this film defines our generation.
1408 I heard this was good...but I doubt it's Halloween, or The Exorcist.
disturbia (lol, although it's good, this is very much a remake sir, see rear window.)
the ring (are you serious? this is a remake and it's a shitty movie.)
slither (technically it's not a remake...but see David Cronenberg's Shivers, and then watch Night of the Creeps)
the fog (this is very much a remake and it's one of the shitty remakes i'm talking about, please see the original John Carpenter's The Fog sir. it's far better)
cry wolf (a horrible, laughable movie, I'm sorry, I can't believe they had the audacity to try and sell this piece of garbage for 30 dollars at FYE)
the devils rejects (this was good, i won't lie.)
I'm sorry, these films are either unoriginal remakes or shitty shitty movies or both. They are in no way generation defining films. Maybe my buddy's movie isn't Generation Defining...
But I can guarantee you it's original and extremely good. It's far better than a lot of the remakes and other bullshit that's been coming out.

What do you think of "Fear Of Clowns 2"
edwardlavender
09-27-2007, 10:34 PM
i have not seen either fear of clowns, but I heard the first was awful. And if I ever do catch it...I'll most likely watch it. Hell, I watched Jack Frost. So I'll watch it and probably make fun of it.
As for Fear of Clowns 2, no I haven't seen it and I probably won't ever see it. Unless it crosses my path on one of the movie stations.

Looks good. I can't believe they were able to secure a street location with that budget. That's awesome.
They also really outdid themselves with the DVX100. This reminds me of 28 Days Later and how it was shot with the Canon XL1s.
edwardlavender
09-28-2007, 10:08 PM
Yyeah, and get this, that street that they got secured was in downtown Orlando and not only did they get it secured...It was without hesitation, they were actually thrilled about it. I kinda feel sorry for Florida...it was supposed to be the next big spot after New York and then California and then never happened...Poor Florida.
The Camera work they did was amazing. They used a 35mm adapter on the dvx100a. It looks amazing.

and full sail has top of the line equipment.

well i still have to get a better camera let alone a phone with a camera so i might have to wait for that one. Most cameras record in 3gp or something dont they? Is that easily converted or can it be put into an editing program as is?
edwardlavender
10-02-2007, 02:56 AM
if you get a conversion program, it's easy to do. just google 3gp to avi conversion.
although, i think you can put it in an editor as is.

Have you seen the remake of Halloween?
I thought it was really good.
WesScog
10-02-2007, 11:36 PM
The Remake of Halloween while a DECENT movie in it's own right, was massively inferior to Carpenter's original.
edwardlavender
10-03-2007, 12:38 AM
I haven't seen it. But again, I heard it was terrible. I will never go see a remake in a theater. I refuse to add to the already growing problem of supporting remakes.
It's nothing against Rob Zombie tho, I loved his previous two movies, but Halloween is my all time favorite horror movie and is definitely in at least my top 10.
I'll wait for it on DVD. But I can't see it having anything on the remake. I love Sheri Moon but I'll take old school PJ Souls over her any day of the week.

When movies are understood as classics. There shouldn't be any need to remake them. They're perfect just the way they are. There is no need to remake a classic movie.
