Napolean Dynamite, Thats a CLASSIC
Since it'd be nice for this thread to transcend everyone posting their own list, I'm gonna go ahead and say....
You're effing kidding right?
I've seen a lot of movies in my day (I'll post the lists to prove it if necessary), but I don't think I've ever seen a movie try so hard to avoid having something happen. And I'm not a complete Napoleon hater, I think that there are a lot of interesting characters set up in the movie. However, once those characters are established nothing of any interest really happens to any of them!
Now, I didn't see this until after it was a "big deal", so maybe all the hype predisposed me to not like it, but I couldn't get over the idea that it was just an attempt to spawn a new series of catchphrases and pop culture references.
TOTALLY UNFAIR, SLIGHTLY SARCASTIC GENERALIZATION ALERT: If this is your favorite movie, you've clearly only seen one movie in your life.

I have a hard crush on Miyazaki. I just adore his work, i've watched Spirited Away AT LEAST 7 times, and it's just one of those films that I could sit down and watch anytime.
I can't wait until they start releasing Miyazaki films on HD, I would adore remastered versions of Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke, Kiki's Delivery Service, and Howl's Moving Castle.

Most of the movies I think are my 'favorites' are ones I can just sit down and enjoy, and still get something fantastic out of them them, without feeling like my brain got molested.

maybe you all should think of the reality of things. I mean, its great that they're into filming, but they think that just because their rich parents bought them a fancy camera they are going to be some famous director. And more likely than not, half of the little kids who aspire to be filmmakers now will have a completely different goal in a year, and when they do, I'm sure they will get whatever they want in order to fulfill that dream.
That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. I knew I wanted to be a filmmaker at age 14 and guess what? I'm 17 and still plan on going to film school. Since you think they are incapable of making an enjoyable film, how old are you? I have seen a 14 year old make an enjoyable short before.

Almost all of the big name directors started their love when they were children. J.J. Abrams, Spielberg, Lucas, Shyamalan, Rodriguez, Tarantino, Lee, Scorsese, Anderson.
All of them started when they were kids, or at the very least very young, and I think it's very condescending that you'd assume that all of the young filmmakers here, or elsewhere, all get "fancy" equipment from their "rich" parents.
Some parents who might not be rich, might see that their child has an artistic desire, and save up and borrow money to encourage them. I know Rodriguez's parents were far from rich, but they saw how great he was and helped him get what he needed, even though they didn't have a lot.
SO I think it's a gross generalization, that I think hints at some underlying jealousies or prejudices, and you need to change your perspectives if you want to integrate successfully in this community, who I would like to proudly say has flourished in its ability to ignore any kind of barriers, and just recognize and encourage one another's desire to create.

I just dont think this should be a community that showcases childrens' lack of talent, but rather to aid all prospective filmmakers
There are plenty of very talented young filmmakers here.
We try to aid all filmmakers, young and old, new and veteran, by offering a rainbow of advice from every part of the filmmaking process.
We seek to help any filmmaker that has the desire to try to learn, and works to get better. Rather than tearing them down and telling them what they cannot do, we give them the tools to allow them to push what they are capable of.
I would suggest reserving judgment, and stop with the broad generalizations, we've had plenty of great advice and tutorials filmed by young filmmakers, who have constantly impressed us with their degree of talent.
Likewise, we've gotten some fantastic, established filmmakers to allow us to show off their material, interview them, and who've helped us out by also providing us with plenty of tutorials.
So, instead of judging by age, judge by merit, and reserve judgment until you've seen their work.

Zmunz, I have 2 things to say.
1. Before you call some 14 year olds work crap, why don't we see what you have done? I have seen some pretty good work from 14 year olds.
2. You probably don't know this, but film making is essentially storytelling. if you were walking down the street and you saw some kid telling a story to his friend, would you run up to the kid and say "leave the storytelling to the storytellers!"
Anyone with A camera, Inspiration and Imagination can be a filmmaker. ANYONE.

I have to agree with the other people about your sig, zmunz, even if you have edited all your posts and tooks away your sig.
I started making movies when I was 9 with my mom's sony Hi-8 handycam. I had no way to edit so I had to do it the weird way of rewinding the actual tape and recording at the right spots. I continued this until my friends got one with a flash card. We made movies with that and then I finally got my own camera a little over a month after my 15th birthday. Sure not all my stuff is enjoyable but I've posted some of it on the internet and everyone of them has had at least one good things said about it weather its through comment, message, rating, talking.
I would like to see how old you are and what movies you have made. Just to see if you are worthy of even telling 14 year olds to put away their aspirations, even if they only last a small amount of time. It's people who tell others that they can't do things without seeing their work that ruins the area of the work. if someone told Kubrick not to make movies where would we be today? We'd be without one of the greatest directors ever...

HECK YEAH!!! Killer Klowns it quite possibly the most creative movie I have ever seen. They could have just taken the normal road and had guys escape from a mental hospital and kill people while dressed like clowns. But everyone has done/seen that before. What they did with the movie was way more fun to watch. Even though it's low budget and it suffers a little from that, it's still a really good movie.

Falling Down (One of the greatest "an hero" of all time)
Saving Private Ryan (Best World War 2 film I've seen)

It was just some shit like "to all you filmmakers under 14 making you no-plot ninja movies, leave the filmmaking to the filmmakers HUAH! I'm better than you" or something like that. It was probably worse for real actually.
Thanks. I figured it was something like that judging from the responses.
SWEET LIST. Besides King Kong, all of those are great movies. I've probably seen the Princess Bride 50 times and I nearly died laughing during Death at a Funeral. And the Prestige is just one of the best movies ever, period.
I like King Kong a lot, I just like the story behind it and I thought that the special effects in the original and newest (Peter Jackson's) really pushed the boundaries. Although Jurassic Park has better dinosaurs.
I've seen Princess Bride over 50 times too, I love it.
And I'm glad that somebody else has seen/enjoyed Death at a Funeral, I think it's one of the funniest movies I've ever seen.

1933 King Kong: 100 mins
2005's poor excuse for King Kong: 187 mins with an extended cut lasting 201min
Hmmmm..... Some would say embellishments are ok but doubling the length goes beyond embellishment. It's down right putting an entire other movie in to the original.
Anyway, I do digress and I do recognize that some do in fact like Jackson's King Kong just as much as I recognize people like Romi and Michelle's Highschool Reunion. They just weren't for me.
17thletterfilms
05-20-2008, 08:24 PM
Plot from original 1933 King Kong:
A film crew goes to a tropical island for an exotic location shoot and discovers a colossal giant gorilla who takes a shine to their female blonde star.
Plot from 1976 remake of King Kong:
A petroleum exploration expedition comes to an isolated island and encounters a colossal giant gorilla.
Plot from 2005 remake of King Kong:
In 1933 New York, an overly ambitious movie producer coerces his cast and hired ship crew to travel to mysterious Skull Island, where they encounter Kong, a giant ape who is immediately smitten with leading lady Ann Darrow.
Making a movie longer doesn't mean that it makes it worse. Plus, your response really had nothing to do with the fact that
he didn't use the original plot. :P

The plot and such seemed rather... ill formed. The silences in the movie, although they might have delivered some sort of artistic value, found me sitting uncomfortably in my seat bored. The action sequences and character relationships seemed, like the plot, ill formed. Maybe I'm of a lower order of film viewer, who isn't willing to attempt to look too deep into the movie. I quote the ridiculous things Daniel says at certain times (i drink your milkshake), but other than that the movie left no notable mark on my mind.

Yes, but there was also a number of existing classical compositions used in the film, as well as other Johnny Greenwood songs that were created for other films, such as the experimental film, Bodysong. It's actually why Greenwood's oscar nomination was disqualified, because it's not a 100% original score.

For many years, my favorite movie was "My Fair Lady", mostly because of the character, Professor Higgins (I know, probably not anything any of you have seen...and it's a musical, to boot)
"A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum", also a musical, is another one. (A musical comedy this time. Done back in the 60's or so. Watch it...I think you'd like it.)
"The High Country", with Linda Purl and Timothy Bottoms. Kind of obscure, but I liked the characters and the situation.
"Alien Resurrection". Ripley totally rocks in this one. I wish they'd make another one about what it is like for Ripley, being a hybrid Alien/Human now that she has returned to Earth. However, Sigourney Weaver is probably a bit too long in the tooth to play the part, so they'd possibly have to get someone new.
"The Shoes of the Fisherman". This is another old film from the 60's. I first saw it with my parents when I was probably 6 or 8 years old. Kind of a convoluted plot, involving a catholic priest who flees communist Russia, then, through and odd twist, ends up becoming Pope and has to deal with trying to negotiate peace during a time of nuclear tensions.
