Understand Decoding

I trying to wrap my head around the avchd format, and one of the things I dont understand is what are the reasons for decoding avchd footage?

I believe its because its a different format and alot of video editors still aren't able to work with raw AVCHD footage.

im not 100 percent sure though a bit of research might help
