Ive noticed that when talking about cameras, the term "like film" has been brought up numerous times, what exactly does this mean?

I assume you mean as in regards to "filmizing", where people will color correct footage to make it look a bit more like film, and will shoot on cameras that shoot at 24fps like film.

"film look" is a crock. In theory, the term should refer to a tonal range or contrast, or even grain, but what they mean is 24 fps, which IS standard film speed, however, shooting video at that speed does nothing to make it look like film. The ONLY benefit of shooting video at 24 fps is if you are shooting high rez (2k or above) with the intent to transfer to film (regular 30 fps - rounding up - video needs to be resampled down to 24 fps, which means frame droppage or frame blending, both of which look hinky).

I tend to think the film look is shooting with a 35mm adapter and proper lighting.

24 fps is below the threshold of motion. Motion blur smooths this out a little bit, but the little bit of strobing that remains is also a part of it.
