View Full Version : RCA to PC
When I can, I film weddings and such. I also edit footage for people if they want stuff on DVD. I have a client that has a good 10 VHS tapes along with 5 or so High 8 tapes. If possible, she wants me to edit them onto DVD for her.
My problem is that I have no way of going from RCA to my computer. My personal camera is Mini DV and I just use firewire for that.
Is there some sort of device that goes RCA to firewire or possibly a cheap but decent PCI card that will capture RCA and will also be recognized by Adobe Premiere Pro?

If your camera supports video in, you can use the camera as a deck and record the VHS signal through that. Plug an old VCR into your MiniDV camera and then make sure it is displaying through Premiere. The trick here is to disable external control in Premiere. Click on the settings tab, then change "Device Control" to none. This will allow you to click on the capture button without turning on the tape playback of your camera.
If everything works, you will be able to record pretty much anything through your camera. Personally I use a HVR-M15 as a deck, but have done this many times when transferring other formats. The only thing you have to check is if your camera will support a video-in signal which most do.

If you need to plug RCA cables into the PC, you can use this. http://shopper.cnet.com/tv-tuner-adapters/zio-cameramate-videosafe-cm/4014-9332_9-31231228.html

I use one and it works fine for me. I'm sure if you searched some more, you can find something sililar that uses firewire rather than USB.

the biggest issue you will have is losing quality during the transfer. you can get really cheap versions of the rca device, put you will get really bad pixellization. if you are doing weddings and other transfers, take some time to research it and drop some cash so that you get good quality.

I've been using a pinnacle studio movie box, and only because it stated audio/video sync lock as one of it's features. Haven't done a lot with it at this point, some transfer from svhs, and direct to pc capture, so far looks like it will work out.
