I have a Sony Handycam DCR-HC96E. I don't want to spend a lot of money, but is there a method of adding depth of field to my footage? This could be with a lens or some footage. Thanks.

Do you mean how to make it shallower (so like the background is blurred but the subject is in focus), or do you mean how to make it deeper? (so the background and subject are in focus.)
Well the easiest way to do the first is to back up and to zoom in a little. The more telephoto your image is the shallower the depth of field.
Easiest way to deepen the DOF is to turn it as wide as possible.

Wes is the man.
What I do with my HV30, is put it close up the the subject and fiddle with zoom and focus till the shot looks good. Every shots different for me.

nd filters will screw in to the filter threads on your camera. I am guessing 37mm but I would check. the filters lower the amount of light entering the camera so the camera opens it's iris as wide as it goes, provided a shallower image.
