I just got a HV40 and now i want to get a wide angles lens and filter.

Some people have said to get a 43mm filter and attach the 43mm-52mm step up ring and then the Raynox. But someone else said that was a terrible idea to put a filter between the Raynox and the cam beacause of vignetting.

Some other people have suggested getting a 52mm filter and attaching it to the step up ring and then attaching the Raynox to that.

Lastly, some people have suggested getting 72mm filters and attaching it directly to the raynox. So that leaves these 3 options that have either been recommended or bashed.

Option 1: Cam -> 43mm filter -> step up ring -> Raynox 6600
Option 2: Cam -> step up ring -> 52mm filter -> Raynox 6600
Option 3: Cam -> step up ring -> Raynox 6600 -> 72mm filter (which would require purchasing an addition 43mm-72mm step up ring if you wanted to just attach the filter directly to the cam without the Raynox.

Which of these 3 is the consensus choice?

The 43-52mm adapter is so thin that it creates almost no discernible vignetting for the HV series under all the circumstances I have seen.

Adding another filter between the step-up ring and the Raynox would only make any potential vignetting worse, so I don't really see how that fixes anything. Which filter were you told to put between them?

As for the 72mm threading, i'm totally baffled by that suggestion... the mounting threading on the back of the Raynox is 52mm, so you wanted a 52-43 adapter...

The 72mm threading is on the FRONT of the Raynox, so getting a 72-43mm adapter would require flipping the adapter around, and would be completely weird.

The front of the Raynox is bigger than the back, so if you flipped it around you'd be collecting far less light, and it would probably make the barrel distortion worse.

Also, someone correct me if I am wrong, but these mini-Wide angles, I am pretty sure that the image on one side does not match the image on the other.

Since the lens is focusing a wide image into a tinier area, I would imagine it's possible you'd get the opposite effect if you flipped it around, since you're reversing the lens elements.

So go with the 43-52, that is the cheapest and most direct route, and for all of the videos i've been able to find utilizing it, I can see no real discernible vignetting.

What kind of filter do you want?

He means that if he were to get a 72mm Filter (UV, CPL, etc.) Then to use the same filter without the Raynox, which has 72mm front threads, he would need a 43-72 step UP ring.

Well I was trying to figure out what kind of filter would work best for me, i've been doing some research on all of them.

I was trying to figure if you can use any filter with a wide lens without any vignetting.

Really just trying to see what works best.

Heres a vid where this guy uses a Raynox 6600 with a Hoya 8x ND filter.

Yea, I am still not seeing any Vignetting, just get a 43-52 converter and you'll be fine.

no filter what so ever?

Wait, I think I just got what you were asking.

Yes, if you want a filter, put it on the outside of the lens attachment instead of between the lens and the adapter.

so is it

Cam -> step up ring -> filter -> wide angle lens

I think it should be Camera>Step Up Ring>Wide Angle Lens>Filter

Right, any filters you get put on the OUTSIDE of the lens.

But of course that is an issue because it means you'll have to have that lens on the cam if you want to use your filter.
