Myrtle Beach cops bust student filmmakers for indecent exposure

JULY 6--Eight young moviemakers are facing indecent exposure charges for allegedly filming simulated sex acts on a South Carolina beach for a spring break-themed production. Myrtle Beach cops rounded up the group--all of whom attend or have graduated from the North Carolina School of the Arts--after witnesses reported seeing a woman "fellating or simulating fellatio" on a man late Wednesday evening. None of the witnesses, however, reported seeing any nudity, according to a July 2 Myrtle Beach Police Department report (http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years/2009/0706091myrtle2.html). One of those busted told TSG that the group was filming "Beach Week," a comedy about six college students, and that "there was nothing illegal going on" during filming, which included no nudity. The eight arrestees, seen in the below mug shots, included actress Taylor Hancock, 21, and actor/director Joseph Flanders, 21. Flanders, pictured to the right of Hancock, declined to answer TSG questions about the incident. After spending about 12 hours in custody, crew members were each released on $1000 bond. Along with seizing camera equipment and the "Beach Week" script, cops also confiscated a jacket embroidered with the word "Police." The garment, a crew member told TSG, was to have been worn by an actor portraying a cop. The script called for the fictional policeman to issue a summons to Hancock and Flanders for their inappropriate display of affection.

There are hundreds... no THOUSANDS of worse crimes police could be dealing with. Sure some things may not have been quite right, but seriously?

I feel bad for them, losing all their equipment. (Not to mention the 1k)

I don't see what the big deal is if the 12 year old already knows whats going on. Clearly there was a flaw in the parenting at some point, damn old people and their culture shock. Also they must be pretty good actors if they reviewed the tape and deemed it obscene.

Just goes to show you that those orange or green traffic vests with "Film Crew" stenciled on the back are an investment well worth the money...

Would the vests help if the cops saw them doing what they were doing... I know it might help because people wouldn't phone the cops but if they saw you otherwise.

I dont get the "crime" they committed, was it the fact that the cops dont know for sure that they weren't having sex, or the fact it was simulated but still somehow a crime?

Like this won't get thrown out. They will have to pay court costs and maybe get a lawyer but I doubt it. Big deal.
