Okay, so one day I had just made a Smoke Grenade prop.
Then my friend came over, and my friend loves to make small bombs and basically everything that burns, explodes or just says BANG.
He saw my recently made Smoke Grenade prop, and the conversation went like this.:)

(picks up the smoke bomb)
Friend : Heey, what's this?
Me: It's a smoke grenade.
Friend : Cool, how does it work.
Me: It doesn't, it a movie prop.
Friend : Yeah, but how does it work.
Me: It doesn't, it's just supposed to look like a Smoke Grenade.
Friend : Okay?? What happens when I pull the safety.
Me: Nothing, alright.
Friend : Well how do you make it smoke then?
Me: Post- Production on the computer.
Friend : So it doesn't come smoke out of this?
Me: No.
Friend : So....how does it work then??

e.t.c, e.t.c.....

Do you see what I mean, I'm sick of people that don't even know what a movie prop is.
People who think that every weapon or grenades in movies are real ( well, some of the weapons might be, but they are still fixed).

Anyone else have this problem??

I have the same problem explaining what a compositor does "you're like an animator?" I go on to correct them...they always look at me, nod, smile, and in the end say..."So you're an animator"

Nowadays, I just tell folks I'm a file clerk. Much easier and no one wants to know how it's done.

I run into this problem when I do Wild West Reenactments...but it's to do a different degree.
People think that blanks in stage guns can't hurt you, so you constantly have the drive into people that blanks can kill just like real bullets. Sticking a gun loaded with blanks to your head, will kill you just the same as a real loaded gun.

Just ask John Erik ("Voyagers!") Hexum. Goofing off on the set of the show he worked on after Voyagers! he shot himself point blank in the head with a blank. Ended up brain dead.

I hate having to explain things to people. Your conversation made me laugh though.
"What happens when I pull the safety?"
"Nothing, alright."
Hahaha.

I hate having to explain things to peopleI know, there was also this time when I was going to make a fake cut with liquid latex on a friend that was curious about liquid latex.

So I started out by painting a stripe on his arm, the latex was still white because it hadn't dried yet. and the instance I laid on his arm he asked.

-" So this is supposed to look like a cut??"

Then I had to explain that I had just started, and that it needed make-up and fake blood.:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

So.....yeah.:D

To the best of my knowledge, prop making is not a part of any film program, though it's likely there are theatre classes on the subject. For theatre the focus would be less of the Indy Mogul type and more for general principles in fabrication of standard theatre props like set pieces, and maybe make-up.
