View Full Version : Black Levels on Monitor vs. TV

So, ever since I've begun making films, this problem has been present.

Most of my films go straight to youtube/vimeo, and not usually on to TV.

Problem: After I finish editing on Premiere or After Effects, and I export my footage, black backgrounds end up being a sort of dark grey.

I read somewhere that the black level on television (and my camera, a vx2000), are different than that of a computer monitor.

I want to know how I can get my blacks to show up as solid black when viewing them through youtube or vimeo.

As you can see below, the black areas of Windows Media Player are true black. But after I export my film, what should be true black looks like a dark/grey/purple.

Any help?

Well, are you viewing them on the same monitor? I could be more to do with the conversion process to FLV and less to do with something on your end.

What are you exporting the footage as?

I'm exporting it to an AVI. Here a link to it on Vimeo. On vimeo, the black appears more correctly, to my eye atleast.

I am viewing them on the same monitor, too.

Windows Media Player often gets it wrong, but that doesn't mean the video itself is flawed. Since you said it looks OK on vimeo, it looks like that's the case here. If you want it to look better when you play it back on your computer, try another player like VLC. Microsoft is good at making OS's, but video isn't their specialty.

I actually do use VLC, just wondering why it looked this way in WMM.

It does look pretty "black" on Vimeo, so I suppose it's just WMM!

Thanks for the help!

Also, things will look a little different on every single TV and monitor you play it on. My film is noticeable darker on the TV in my living room vs the TV in my bedroom.
