View Full Version : Let's Cause Mass Paranoia!

I've been thinking lately, and I would like to conduct a social experiment, and with all the forum member's being from all over the world, I thought, why not start it here? What I am proposing is a simple, yet effective way to see what happens when something simple is brought forth with no prior knowledge and unleashed into the general population.

What I want to do is, if you participate in this experiment, All you would do, is (almost) every time you go out of the house, just have a/a few paper(s) with the date "November 16th 2009 at 2:53 PM EST", and leave it in places where it will be seen, I'm keeping it simple, because when people see it, they wont think much of it at first, but then. they will see it in other places too, and eventually tell their friends, and those friends will tell their friends, and start a chain reaction.

If you want to participate in this, then tell me, and just leave those papers in random places! Have fun! :D

that is kind of random and pointless

What's special about that date? This isn't much of an experiment. What are we going to find out from it? Nothing really. I suggest tweaking it a little bit, then I might join in.

Actually, I think it would be a good way to study how the masses react to certain, absolutely unknown, phenomena. Will they just see it as a viral marketing ad for a movie? (Though this is unlike because I put the time of day for that reason), will they see it as the end of the world? Will they shrug it off?

If it pulls through, we'll see.

This doesn't really make much sense. How are you planning on knowing how people react one way or another? Are you planning on following every person who sees these pieces of paper for 3 months?

Well, no, but if this goes as planned, then it will most likely reach the internet. And maybe even just hearing it around. And if it goes extremely well, then maybe even the media.

Isnt physiology "the study of the mechanical, physical, and biochemical functions of living organisms"?

And by putting it in random places, I do mean places where people will look, such as bill boards and public places.

Good luck, then. Wouldn't something like this be better suited to something like that 4chan site?

You probably just looked that up. If your on these forums I would think you would want to focus on Filmmaking more than conducting worthless "experiments".

People have tried this on 4chan before, but that site has waaaaaay too many people going to it, People try to become the leader and change the ideas to what they think would be cool, so I thought it would be better starting it on a smaller forum. (Not that this is small, just smaller than 4chan) And everyone here is at least aware with each other, unlike 4chan, where your completely anonymous.

Well of course I looked it up, but I knew the basic principals of it, and decided getting an actual definition would be better than trying to explain it myself. I think the words you were looking for earlier is psychology, which I have been getting more into lately. :P

And yes, I do like focusing on film making, but that's why I posted this is Chit-Chat.

I think the words you were looking for earlier is psychology, which I have been getting more into lately. :PI think you meant to use the singular form, "word", rather than the plural, "words".

Seriously though, this is all a terrible plan. Not because it'll get you into trouble, but because it's an idiotic excuse for you to go "I'm going to run a little social experiment ... muhahaha" because it makes you feel cool. The most likely outcome is that very few people would be involved, no one would care and there would be little more internet attention than "some crazy was leaving papers again about when the world is going to end".

I'm taking over - the plan is now to make fortune cookies with hilariously specific messages and switch them out for the fortune cookies at Chinese restaurants. For example, "Joe, you are going to contract a venereal disease from that hot blonde you like at Brandon's party this Saturday"

Well, I wasn't really going for "'I'm going to run a little social experiment ... muhahaha' because it makes [me] feel cool." I just thought it would be interesting to try.

But I do see your point.

Sigh... I guess I just envisioned it weird, I dont mean for it to be "OH MAH GAWD A PEICE OF PAPER" I just meant for it to be subtle and eventually rise up. I dunno, I guess I just think too weirdly. :P

But really? Do you all have to be like "Your idea is bad and you should feel bad!"?

You're missing the point. You're wanting to plan a social experiment. An experiment, in which you're hoping people will start talking about it on the internet. You're also planning said experiment on a public forum. How long do you think it's going to take before someone finds this thread?

That is a good point, if this didn't fail from the beginning, We could have made a new date by adding text in between the numbers of the date, like:

dfokgng 17/ fljsdfhpasdjfudh 11/ sdjfhsdjkf 09. And it would be 17/11/09.

The idea is not stupid. It suprises me to see so much hostility from everyone else on this board of all places. Way to be supportive to new ideas guys. I think it's a cool concept, and if enough people would join in, it could have a really interesting effect. If you really want this to work, apparently you're going to have to go somewhere other than Indy Mogul, as it seems a majority of our members are to ignorant and defensive to deal with anything worth talking about. (I mean that in the nicest possible way guys.) :P

This is his: Get famous quick scheme.

And it is dumb, it's just a variation on many multiples of "anonymous as it occured" social experiments. Eventually the beginner is discovered, and tadaa, temporary fame.

It is interesting (I'll give you that), but an overworked idea dreamed up by thousands of people before you.

I think it would be a pretty good idea. I don't think many regular people who see the flyers will respond. Most will probably just see it as a viral marketing ad and disregard it. However if we were to buy huge billboards and benches, and the side of blimps then maybe. But the hardest part would be getting a person in Ireland to see the ad, then tell a person in America about it, who saw the same ad, and then having the American tell the Irish person that they saw the same ad too, so that they both wonder why it is covering such a vast area.

I think this idea would be better suited to a movie than real life. Hmm, permission to write a script?

However if we were to buy huge billboards and benches, and the side of blimps then maybeSo people are more likely to think that the writing on billboards is a sign of doom (and not a marketing gimmick) and random papers in the street are marketing (and not the doings of some crazy trying to spread signs of doom) - the world is all topsy turvy now, it's the end of the world!
