View Full Version : Neil Peart vs. Mike Portnoy?

Who's the better drummer.
Many people say Peart is
but I like both...
They both have a different style of
drumming. Peart is more of original
content and writing songs/ lyrics and
having 30 minute solos in his songs with
Rush.
Portnoy has alot of talent with riff's
and drumming in general and just
the basic techniquest blended into
a vast arrangement with his set. He
incorporates his whole set with everything.

Who vs Who?
Alasdair

who cares, drumming takes no talent. You're just hitting something with a stick.
If I ever form a band it will be all drummers so we don't need musical talent at all!
punkandska66
12-02-2007, 01:51 PM
its harder than you think
does playing guitar take talent, then? all your doing is scraping metal wires with a small peice of palstic and moving your fingers, right?
hitting a drum isnt drumming. if you are on a drum set you have to use both arms at the same time, and it has to still have musical value. same thing with your feet, you're working the hi-hat and the bass. and then you have to put all those together so you are playing with both your feet and you're hands and it all has to fit.
i'd like to see you try against some one who has been playing for only one year, and i bet you they will be better than you because its not just hitting, its an actuall instrument that you gotta practice with.

guitar doesn't work - you have to rapidly change your fingers from position to position while keeping them from getting all tangled up and keeping the notes in your head, it requires high manual dexterity.
Drumming is hitting something with a stick. I guess sometimes you hit different drums with sticks.
It's also the only instrument you can learn to actually play from rockband

A good drummer should know that a 30 minute drum solo is a bunch of pretentious crap. A good drummer knows how to put the right beat to the right tune and not decend into a load of prog rock boredom.
Some examples of proper drummers that know that simplicity is the key are: Scott Asheton, Tommy Ramone and Paul Cook.
30 minute drum solos? How can you sit through that? Its a buch of unlistenable arrogance and self indulgence. And incorperating every part of your drum kit in one song is just "hey look at me aint I great?".
Both of those drummers just masterbaite their egos.

you dont learn anything from playing rockband there is actually technique used in drumming it takes a hell of a lot more coordination and physical strength and endurance then guitar and its a lot harder to learn
Alasdair

What's the difference between rock band drums and real drums, in both you're hitting something with a stick, there's your technique. Oh it requires a lot of physical strength and endurance to move that stick and hit a drum with it. Maybe if you're using steel rods with weights on them.
I think it's hilarious that anybody would seriously say that drumming is harder than playing a guitar. There's a reason why drummers are so easily replaced in bands.

Drummers are actually hard to find. You can find more guitarists and bassists than drummers.
You have to play with both hands and both feet. I don't think you've ever played a musical instrument, but they're all hard to play. It takes practice.
You don't just hit random drums to make a song.
Each drum makes a different sound and you have to play them
correctly. You can't just hit different things around...I don't know what kind of drum set you're thinking about, but it's not those little electronic ones. It takes alot of strength, you have to be coordinated and alert at all times, and listening to the music. It's not easy playing for over an hour when you're at a gig or something...especially heavy metal or rock music.
Rock Band doesn't count...it's all fake. It's a game. You can learn to play the notes, and get used to the beats and stuff, but you're not actually playing a REAL drum set. The real thing is much more different than virtual drums.
I suggest you take a trip down to your local music store, and try playing on a set. Then you'll be back here editing your posts.

Er, I have played real drums as well. It's pretty much the same. I just feel like a wanker hitting something with a stick.
etentertainment
12-02-2007, 03:37 PM
Have you played any other instrument?
Alasdair
12-02-2007, 03:41 PM
Trumpet, guitar, tuba, and the recorder to some extents - why?
With all of them it took a lot of practice before it sounded good. With drums as I'm hitting them with a stick it sounds exactly the same as somebody drumming all their life.

Okay, record yourself playing the drums, then show it to us.
So you're saying, you can sound as good as Neil Peart. He's been playing professionally since age 12 or something.
Let's see.
I can play trumpet, guitar, recorder, violin, drums, tambourine, piano, keyboards, harmonica, electric guitar, bass, tenor sax, and much more...
I can't read music on all of them..I don't know all the notes, but I can still play them...it doesn't sound like the greatest music ever, but I still can play them
I've been playing violin for 8 years...that one, I can play the best...and I've been playing percussion since I was 3.

I don't have a drum set - I have college to pay for and don't need something fancy and expensive to hit with a stick.

Ethnic doesn't mean for Black people. It said that drums started in Africa, that has nothing to do with the website's name.
Ethnic = pertaining to or characteristic of a people, esp. a group (ethnic group) sharing a common and distinctive culture, religion, language, or the like.
See?

Umm..your sticks looked pretty thick so I thought they were the green Vic Firth's.
Those green ones are marching sticks...so I don't recommend drumming with those. I think medium ones are good for your type of music.

The drums aren't easy, maybe they are easier than the guitar (for the record I'm a guitarist) but it still takes talent to play them. That being said, nobody wants to hear a 30 minute drum solo. Drums help keep the rhythm of a song and a good drummer knows how to make a song sound good, not just show off their talent.

Alasdair WTF??? Are you on drugs or something? Why are you making fun of someone for being overwight? That's low, man. Really low. And he didn't say anything bad about black people. And why are you so obessed with saying that the drums are easy? You ever heard what happends when a kid plays the drums for the first time? Ouch. You have to learn them just like any other instrument. But Being a jerk about the drums is something I don't really care about. Stop making fun of fat people and calling people racist when they haven't said anything racist.

I would have to say Neil Peart is Way better because he donst need to have a ego about his drum playing, On the other hand Portnoy is allways boasting and acting arrogant , Eg ( the new dream theater album special edition on the dvd portion Mike did most of the talking). Neil also out plays portnoy there my 2 cents on this topic.
