Today in school I was approached by the varsity soccer team because they need someone to tape games because they know I make movies (in other words, own a camera). I told them that for some pay I would do it. Since I have never done anything like this, I was wondering if anyone had any tips. I also know that I will be taping from the press box so is a telephoto lens recomended? Thanks for any tips!!!

I was an intern this summer at jookt.com, and we would move around every 10 minutes or so so it looked like we had more than one camera at the game then edit it, but idk if they want you to show the whole game or just highlights

I think they want the whole game for analysis.

Telephoto lenses can be tricky to keep in focus. Also, you would be totally cool to do it for free, and only ask for free admission and whatever you spend on tapes. You're getting paid in experience. If you feel like you should be paid for your time then by all means, take what they give you, but they may not be happy about it.

Don't ask for pay, especially if you've never done it before. I edit sports highlights for my school teams, and I can guarantee that you'll have a hard time filming for the first few games. It takes a lot of getting used to, this is live action that cannot be re-filmed. I'd suggest moving every now and then, but keep the camera rolling while you move just in case.

exactly what I was thinking. I'm starting to go to random events, film it, then give the people who need it the finished product for there website, to keep, ect. Once you get experience/ a lot of work, the cash will come.

Also, turn off the camera during every quarter and half-time break, and bring an extra battery. Probably an extra tape, too, in case the game runs long.

EDIT: Woo! 100th post!

thanks for the tips, and by pay I meant tape compensation.
