View Full Version : Horror subgenres
So this guy's (http://forum.indymogul.com/showthread.php?t=27403) horror questionnaire had a question asking what is your favourite type of horror genre. But the categories he had struck me as kind of odd.
...snipped...
So, horror nerds, if you had to make a short list of subgenres to classify horror movies, how would you break it down?

or how about nothing at all
.....ghost shit and slasher are both horror...they are both horrifying things to happen to someone...if you was getting assed raped by a ghost or cut up by a murder....would you be laughing or be horrified.....
If you don't want to categorize horror, then you are probably not a horror nerd.

You dont need to to categorize horror to be a horror buff.
I was half joking with the "U R NOT TRU HORROR NRD!" and I'm not exactly going to treat categorization as the be-all and end-all most serious thing ever.
But if you all wanna be sourpuss about it, I'll start my reverse psychology approach, see if I can get some nerds who value genre classification:
You know what's my favourite horror movie? Twilight. I liked it because Edward glittered in the sunlight and wasn't too scary. I like it best when horror movies aren't too scary. Or when there's songs and stuff, like in Snow White, another great horror movie. I know some people say it's not a horror movie, but I don't think you should pin down creative stuff with too much "finding repeating motifs" and "differentiating between groups that share common characteristics."

isn't "haunted house" typically survival horror?
I wouldn't say typically. Do you have some example movies that you'd say are both haunted house and survival horror?

Resident Evil?
but I normally classify "survival horror" in videogames not really movies.
I like Horror-comedy and psychologial horror, stuff that messes with your head (I think Silence of the lambs and other hannible moves can be placed in the catigory)

I would think that a haunted house movie would be classified under Paranormal/Ghost.

So you're saying Hitchcock's The Birds isn't survival horror?

I didn't say you couldn't use the term survival horror for movies, I was just saying that I've always just heard and used it to refer to videogames.

The Shining.
The hotel is friggin haunted and the family is trying to survive.

a group of people trying to not be killed by 1 person...that is the plot to any horror movie..
Ok I got this one for sure,
FRED

Well, in the ghost rape movie you mentioned earlier, they're trying to not get raped by the ghost.
Okay. Let's forget the categories I made up for a minute. I was just using them as an example.
If you were to try to list subgenres of horror, what would be on your list?
We've established that Vaughn's list would be one entry long. Would anyone make a list two or more long?
