How are you supposed to hold the glidecam when you are walking with the actor (wanna be track shot)?

are you supposed to just hold on to the cushioned handle or are you also supposed to touch the metal pole part also.

Hold the handle? Steadicam has a video for the pilot that would also be good training for a glidecam.

Actually you need to be holding both in a sense. The main handle is where all the weight goes. That is what you need to hold it up by. However, on the center post you should have a very very light touch to give yourself more control. This seems to be over looked by several people, but it does need to happen. It is going to take a while to learn but there you go.

Make also sure you have it balanced. Here is a really well made tutorial on hw to balance it and hold it. I'm getting a Glidecam soon so this helped me.
