I am a photographer who would like to start making movies, soon. Well, I would also like to start picking up the pace with my photography, for I am not well equipped. I only have a 14 megapixel Kodack z1485. Here is my photography if you are curious:

So, right now, I am about to start taking my time to raise up a high amount of money, well, high amount to me anyways. I am raising about $600-$700 for a new camera. Conveniently, two Canon cameras in that price range have caught my attention. The Canon Hv40, and the Canon Rebel Xsi. Well, one main problem: one does an excellent performance with HD video, while the other is outstanding with photography. I don't know which one to choose. I don't know if I should just stick with photography, or if I should start becoming a filmmaker using my eye for photography. If I pick one, I will have effective performance for either one.

Which one do you think I should choose?

I would strongly suggest you take a look at the Canon T1i (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/613613-REG/Canon_3818B002_EOS_Rebel_T1i_Digital.html). About the same price but it's primary function is photography however it also shoots 1080p HD video! It'll fit both of your wants and provide good quality on both professions.

You may also save up for the 5DMKII as it should being going down in price with the new 1DMKIII coming out. You could probably get a 5DMKII on Ebay.com in a couple of months for about $1,000 to $1,200.

I know a guy very simular to the OP, who does photography, but want to learn a bit more about video. I belive the camera you linked is the one he has, but not sure. I know its a Canon EOS, but it might be the EOS 50D.
(He sent me the pic he took of me on Halloween, and it tells the camera in the info, but I'm at the library atm and can't get to it.

If I don't get my own cam soon, I might recrute him to be my camera man HAHA

Hey, thanks! That camera is something I will most certainly look into!

Although one main reason I want to get the HV40 is because it shoots in 24p, which would give it a real film look. But, that camera you recommended, I am going for that one now when it comes to photography. Thank you!

But, I am still stuck with either photography or video for what camera to choose. I'll think it over some more.

looking like film isn't just frame rate, It's about DOF and CC from a technical standpoint and good composition from a creative standpoint. sure frame rate helps, but when the video gets compressed for the internet, it looks bad ether way (I'm not going to go into a huge thing about compression and how it works here...)
The main thing I think I've failed to illustrate here is, It isn't the Equipment that makes a movie great.

Isn't it the 1DMKIV? I could swear it was but I could be wrong. Nope, just checked on B&H http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/656378-REG/Canon_3822B002_EOS_1D_Mark_IV.html
One would think that Canon would give their top of th line camera a full frame sensor but...

Of course! I already know it isn't always equipment that makes a good movie, there is always a lot more to focus on, and equipment isn't exactly my main focus. For now, I am just looking into a higher piece of equipment to give a better cinematic look than what I own now. I am working to make a low budget movie with a nice film look, so I have also been working on filters, angles, and mood a lot.

the 24p thing is a myth, the only reason film is shot at 24 fps is because its the cheapest way of getting a moving image and audio to sync up without flicker on screen when its projected and even then you have to use at least a x2 shutter speed on the projector to cut the flicker down.

I had a look at your pics, the nature and school stuff really captued my attention it looks really good

I agree with KMProductions, the Canon T1i is probbably the best choice as an all-round tool

I use the Canon T1i and it's a great still and video camera! the videos are HD but are 720p not 1080i and are recorded as .mov files. Not a problem. They look great and are only limited to the amount of storage on the SD card. If you do go this route for video, take along an external audio recording device and do double-system sound. Audio quality on most DSLR cameras truly suck!

True... I thought about that right afte I posted, ah well... I keep mine at the 720/30fps setting. The jumpiness of the 1080/20 didn't work for me!
