View Full Version : A substitute for grip stands?

Having a little more experience on professional film sets, I am starting to realize that the thing that separates them from amateur shoots is the grips. Powerful lights are all well and good, but half the skill in using lights is being able to limit them.

This made me think that there needs to be a no budget substitute for grip stands and it deserves a thread. Unfortunately no useful ideas spring to mind, but if you have any post them here!

Grip stand? Is that another term for C-stand? You could use the base from the Indymogul kino-flo build, and then use different diameter PVC pipes with lots of holes drilled in the for the telescopic function (think "russian dolls" with PVC).

Something I did with PVC last year for light stands. Could easily be modified/beefed up for grip work with flags, cookies, other lighting controls, etc.

hahaha. that is an amazing little "tutorial" or whatever. Yeah I suppose I could have googled it, but grip work in general seems to be neglected on these forums
