If you don't mind me asking, why are you set on a HDD camcorder?

I have about $500-600 too, but i'm saving up a little longer to buy an HV40. I can deal with having my camcorder with no mic jacks and shit for a little longer, maybe you should too.

no reason really, not a big fan of tapes and dvds so meroy sticks and hard drives i favor. Also i have no camera that works at the moment but i have heard of the hv40 but its a little pricy for me.

You can find used HV20s and HV30s that are in your price range, but those are tape based camcorders. I wouldn't recommend a HDD camcorder, they usually aren't too great. Take a look at Canons HF line of camcorders, they are flash memory based.

Try amazon, they usually have good prices. And HV20/30/40 are tape based.

$549 right now for a Canon HF 200. I'm almost sure that's not a tape based camera.

I would save up a little longer and go for a Canon HV series- I just got my HV40 off ebay for £540 (approx $898) so it's a fair amount of saving yet, but it is amazing- even after using sony z7's and canon XL a7s at university- the HV40 is one of the best cameras i've ever used.

Until the HV40 arrived I've been using the Panaosonic NV-GS180- its a great little Camera and its fairly cheap now, around £390 or $650 (still a little high i know)- and its got mic input- it uses Mini DV tapes which i prefer as you have a physical copy of you work in tape form and if anything goes wrong its apparent immediately, and in good lighting the image quality from the 3ccd system is awesome. The biggest down-side to this camera is the low light quality is a bit off and the manual focus is kind of crappy- it uses the function buttons to control the focus so you don't have much control, but after 3 years of almost daily use mine still works fine and i use it as a backup cam on every shoot i do so its worth looking into.
