View Full Version : Dealing with Plagiarism...

Hi fellow IndyMogulers,
I can't believe it but I'm currently having problems with people claiming my work as theres. I made a parody of Chris Crocker on the humor website YTMND.com (birthplace of such internet memes like the "O RLY?" owls and "Chunk is Indestructible") and people are posting it on YouTube; I don't have a problem with people crediting me and posting my stuff on YouTube, but when some jerk claims he made it, it really gets me upset.
Has anyone else got their work plagiarized? And does anyone have any idea what I should do?
It's not like I'm making any money off the video/gif/audio, but I want to be rightfully credited. :(

can you post a link to not only your original ytmnd, but also one or two of the reposting jerkwads?

The one guy LegacyStrike posted my name and my YTMND profile on his video, so he's okay.
EDIT: Just uploaded a video to show you I'm not making this up. It's being converted to Flash Video so, it won't be up until a couple of minutes:

send the uploader a kind request (NO sarcasm, and thank them for liking your creation enough to post it on youtube) that they should give credit to the maker, hopefully by posting a link to you in their description of the video. most will be flattered that you (the guy that made the thing that they liked so much) responded to them. and add them as a friend while asking them to do the same.
if you get no response or a dismissive reply, post a terse video reply.

Gotcha. I just finished doing that. Another guy already responded and credited me, so I'm really happy right now. :)

Thank you very much! :D

On the other hand, getting upset over this is a bit too emo. It's not like they stole your Emmy-nominated TV pilot.
Good point. I really have to admit, this is far from my best work, but despite that, I can't ignore the fact the original site has 40,266 views so far these past 2 weeks. ;)
All in all, I'd say this has been a good thing for you.
I agree. :)

Atleast your video made it to some of those that re-posted your video. In hindsight for your next project you might want to remind those that watch it that they should give credit where credit is due if they decide to the same thing again.
